O2 & MVNO Related Posts

I don't. I was saying I think both Three and BT Group feel like they have all moved forward in the last 3 years where as VMO2 seems to be plodding along at snails pace.
Maybe it's because of slight branding changes and such under the hood that makes it seem like they're doing stuff / are actually investing in certain areas more that need it sooner than VMO2 are?

Ah that’s good to hear, my experience is similar and I find EE are great around Telford.

You mentioned Wolverhampton, is that still decent on EE? Are you using a SA or NSA plan?
EE is excellent in Wolverhampton mainly due to the extensive small cells EE installed in 2022 and 2023.

You get coverage indoors where O2 and VF don’t.

The main macro sites that cover the city centre on O2 have been upgraded and do provide excellent speeds but struggle and collapse when it’s busy. When the football is on is a prime example.

None of these sites have SA on O2, Vodafone have SA on 2 of the sites and I have friends on Vodafone who have compatible SA phones and sims and data does work. None Vodafone SA customers have exactly the same experience as O2 customers during busy periods.

Unfortunately I don’t have an SA compatible phone and sim on EE but there is a chap from Shrewsbury on Twitter who has been and tested EE SA with impressive results.

I am not really in a rush to replace my phone but will if I spot a good deal. If I get an SA device then I will look at changing plans on EE.

Kind of highlights O2’s weird SA deployment.

I did get the best O2 SA speed test result I have ever personally seen on O2 on the site near Junction 2 of the M54.

My phone is utterly useless at times. Data speeds are crippled (more than usual) but in their defence, calls have been okay. But my signal is weaker (one bar at most) so I think my phone is using other masts. Something is definitely wrong. I have a work phone on Vodafone and it’s signal is the same as always - so it does seem limited to just O2.
I meant to come back with an update on this earlier (sorry). But for anyone suffering like I was - an escalation to the executive team is needed.

I tracked down someone senior on LinkedIn - who got me a call back within a few hours. I had tried for a week before this to go through official channels and got nothing. Even the complaints email was unresponsive.

In the end the executive team told me the network was underperforming across large parts of the country and said the company is aware of it. The chap told me they hope in the next few years it will be better - but management is aware there is a long way to go apparently. O2 also acknowledged my area (south Hampshire) was particularly bad and I was given a refund of some of my service and let go from a 24 month contract.

I switched to EE and in comparison, it's flawless.

My own experience through my friend's EE SIM shows they still have a way to go especially with upload but it has helped him in busy areas.

As for the small cells though, I'd like to know how much those small cells help since I've only ever seen them connect when you get quite close and even then I've typically found the macro 5G performance outclassing the 3+7 4G only config.

Edinburgh has loads of small cells too on EE, but I've noticed they have become a lot slower the past few months?

I've struggled getting more than 20-30mbps when connected to them - used to get over 200. I think there might be some sort of speed cap implemented on them.

Is this the case in Wolverhampton/elsewhere too?

That's good to hear, my own experience in Wolves is pretty good most of the time. You mentioned shrewsbury, I really hope the maintenance of the next few weeks improves service around the town centre.

I take it that this means closer collaboration, and even the VM forums merging with O2 etc 🤔 unless that's slightly further down the line (the forums merging into one)

Whenever I've tried the ones in Wolves it's been around 100-150 down, I don't think the majority of phones decide to use them because of the 5G macros doing a good job regardless

That will almost certainly happen but this announcement is just a willy wave about new systems.

It sounds like they've decided that their network core would be better if it's more virtualised, locally distributed and scalable. Pretty much the norm in this day and age.

A massive simplification would be describing it as something goes down, system kicks in and sends traffic elsewhere, and better use of content delivery networks all that sort of stuff.

Not O2 specific folks, but I wonder how good a booster would be?
Not seeing any prices mentioned, you know what that usually means. 😁

It will definitely help with calls and such, but data is another thing.. I'm guessing it would suffer the same fate as a WiFi repeater (booster)

Yeah maybe, you can let us know how you get on with it. (y) 😊

How long before

Residents on the outskirts of Wolverhampton complain about poor mobile coverage

Can just see the following on Trust pilot...

Dreadful service from O2, unable to use data anywhere in Wolverhampton. They need to improve the local network etc...

Than the penny drops when they realise that Cornerstone has actually applied to put a mast in to improve the local network and it got rejected by locals.
