O2 prepares to bow out

MOBILE phone firm O2 is set to exit the UK stock market next month following its £17.7 billion takeover by Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, which is close to completing the deal after investors holding 88 per cent of shares backed the takeover.

Having also bought O2 shares worth 8 per cent, Telefonica now effectively controls just under 97 per cent of the firm's shares.

Telefonica said it expected shares in O2, which has more than 27 million customers, to cease trading on 7 March.

The last remaining obstacle to the deal was cleared last month when the European Commission approved the transaction.

I accepted Telefonica's offer when it became clear no-one else was going to bid for O2, got my cheque the other week.

I only had a few hundred quids worth so I was quite happy to get rid of them for a decent price without being hit by any share dealing charges.

I wonder if the 27 million customers includes all the free sims O2 have given away, most of which probably end up in the back of draws, if they don't sell on ebay.

well I have 3 of those sims was going to use them to put everyone on the same network but now might just stay with Voda and orange.

filled in the forms just wish she had told me sooner and she could have had her money now as she was in a no win situation.

I actually thought shse had sold her shares years ago when they went up in value but she didnt. Asked her for the certificates and she said shes will have tio find them. hope she does as it will be handy for her she is in her 80s and will allow her to get something she needs within reason.

A 42" Plasma TV :)

doubt she will get enough she missed her chance to sell for big profit and how shse ended up with O2 I will never know her shares was from before O2 when she worked for BT she bought shares in her company BT.

MMO2 shares were issued to BT shareholders when they were demerged from BT (One MMO2 for each BT share held, I think).

MMO2 latter rebranded itself (waste of money) as O2 and issued new O2 share certificates.

Yup, as BT shareholders (probably bad move not selling ages ago) we got equal amount of free O2 (good move) which we sold back to telephonica, giving us a wad of free money (exellent news)

mmm, must ask Dad where that cheque went to, you know what old folk are like...

...and yet another British company is bought by foreigners.

I must say I was amused the other night when Real Madrid played Arsenal - Real fielded more English players than Arsenal.

 do you mean Mannesmann (who owned Orange) until they (mannesmann) merged into Vodafone. Orange are now owned (along with Whatnotodoo) by France Telecom, I think.

Too true, I have an O2 mobile that still shows British Telecom on the screen, you can see how often I change my phone.. :o

mmo2 bought over cellnet from bt when bt decided to get out of mobile and consentrate on land-line and satelite telecommunication.

then they decided they wanted back into mobile and setup bt mobile.

mannesman did own orange but had to sell it to buy cellnet due to monopolies and merger rules.

france telecom own orange and wandoo and wanodoo broadband will soon rebrand to wait for it ............orange broadband

Now I really am confused, I'm not aware of Mannesman owning O2.

lost track after that as i left bt 3 years ago

i though they were known as BTCELLNET before. i could be wrong. i have some of those free sims, will go to bin now. I have one number with O2 atm and i dont really spend more than 15 pound a month on it. I wonder what else can i get in 15 quid from some other network:confused:
