Odeon Screen Unseen

Anyone know what this evening's showing will be?

Facebook clues:
1. Learning again from past troubles;
2. Ties to royalty;
3. 33; and
4. Everyone's afraid to stand up and do the right thing.

Can't remember the last time I went to the Pic's.

Used to go all the time when I was a Kid, use to go in around 9.15 in the Morning watch the same Film over and over then leave around 3 in the Afternoon to go Home, ..... was a lot more enjoyable than going to School. :censored:

Since the pandemic, I haven't really bothered. Plus, I find the quality and comfort of a modern home TV/projector and sound system to be infinitely better. I don't completely buy into the "oh.. but you have to see it on the BIG screen!" mantra any more. Even some budget projectors these days can output some pretty decent quality 100"+ output.

The best investment we made just before lockdown was a 55" LG OLED that will handle 4k versions of films.

We feed the sound into our AV system.

If you root around almost every film ever made is findable.

We have several decent cinemas nearby but rarely do they show what we want to watch.

Since the pandemic I think I've been more, it just has that different feel going to the cinema and sitting in the hosue all the time I just wanted out 😄
Don't get me wrong I'd rather sit home than go to some cinemas but the one I got to is pretty decent was all done up not long before the pandemic so I can't complain.

Shortly before the pandemic, I hardly went at all to the cinema although I did enjoy a few Odeon Event Cinema screenings that saved me several trips up to Stratford-upon-Avon to see some RSC productions (which I would have been too lazy to go for). A 55" OLED does beat many smaller cinemas for sharpness of image so I waited for movies to move to streaming to save the pennies.

My viewpoint shifted a little during the pandemic as the media creation industry seemed to be in serious trouble with audiences unable to consume safely in cinemas and there being dangers acting together on sets, plans for an additional local theatre/cinema in my local area were also cancelled.

Via the Lidl app, I was introduced to https://cinemasocietyclub.com/ which provides tickets around the GBP 6 mark and can be upgraded to a small IMAX screen for roughly an additional GBP 7 (which in total is competitive with the retail price, approx. GBP 19.50 which is pushing the budget a little) and my current thinking is that if I pass up the opportunity to see something in IMAX (even a small screen), such an opportunity may not come up again. E.g. I'm glad to have seen Dune in IMAX and I also really enjoyed The Seagull (Emilia Clarke et al).

Some cinemas have lovely sofas and serve wine and olives etc. and if I had one of those near me, I think I would go even more. "Nope" was very good in one of these venues even if the screen was smaller than in many chain cinemas. The centre sound channel at cinemas can be very good and I think I was very impressed with the first MCU movie I saw after the pandemic as I wasn't able to spatially localize the centre channel at the time so it seemed to be coming from the centre of the screen.

What I did was buy myself an Oculus VR headset. The Skybox and Pigasus video apps have the ability to simulate you sitting watching the move in a cinema - seats, screen and everything. After a few minutes you will think you truly are sitting in the cinema.

Pair it with some high quality headphones and you will have perfect cinema experience.

Another option Pigasus has, alongside the netflix app, is you can turn it into a huge floating screen at the size and simulated distance you want. So you can have a 200" screen if you wanted taking up your entire field of view.

The first move I watched on there was Die Hard and the immersive experience was unreal. Watching horror movies on there you sometimes get freaked out.

I did something similar with the Quest 2.

We only go cinema to watch marvel movies and maybe the odd horror if it looks decent.

Loads of tripe out every other week it would be a waste of money considering a few weeks later it's on YTS 😂

I was reminded about this post when I read that Apple were offering what sounds like something similar to Mark's Quest 2 for about ten times the price.

Do I understand that in addition to the Quest 2 one needs extra software? I love the thought of being able to watch (legally Mark!) downloaded mp4 films on a 200 foot screen.

My films are held on a HDD feeding a nvidia shield. Normally they go to my LG TV but presumably I can feed them to a headset?

Can someone point me to a URL where I can read how, please?

Went to see Apocalypse Now. Guy behind snored all the way through, lost interest in the cinema. Went to see Neil Young, guy in row below was a fan of sorts who never shut up, lost interest in going to I've concerts 😁

Agree partially when comparing to regular cinema screens but watching movies on an IMAX screen (specially IMAX 3D) is still beyond what you can do at home. But the Apple Vision Pro will change that in the not too distant future...
