Ofcom Warning - 55% of Brits Still Shunning Broadband

There are many people who live so far from a telephone exchange that reliable BB is not available. Then there are millions who cannot even afford a telephone line, let alone pay for BB. I think far too much emphasis and reliance is put on internet access by the authorities, and certainly by schools.

There seems to be a stigma attached to not having internet access. My daughter, for example, can't afford a phone line, so obviously doesn't have an internet connection. Trouble is, her kids are treated most unfairly by the teachers. When the kids take their homework in for marking, and they have missed something out or have given an incorrect answer, they get told off because the answers can be found on the 'net, and when the kids say they don't have internet access at home, they get told sharply, "Well, it's about time you did!", and even get detention because of it as if it is their own fault

Wonder how many will want internet if BT force phorms webwise on customers.

IIRC aren't Labour funding connections for people on low incomes ?

:hrmph:

Yes, but it will take time to implement over the whole country, and it will still leave many without internet access. The help will be in the form of a low cost connection to the internet and should also include a grant towards a cheap computer (but not the full cost!). What it won't cover is the cost of installing a phone line, or the monthly line rental, and there are many who can't afford a phoneline, or can't get one because they have a bad credit record.

So, the government promise sounds great, but it will fall a long way short of helping all those who need it.

If you can't afford phone line maybe the wireless route with low usage no phone line needed.

Can't say that i blame that 55% at all really, given the way that BT openreach will not give any assurances regarding adsl supplied over their existing copper wire infrastructure i doubt that they have even changed their stance on Fiber As things are the odds are well and truly stacked against the ADSL or FTTC/h consumer when it comes to Faults within their infrastructure, until they change this then it's no wonder why so many aren't interested , and that applies to city and town dwellers too
