Nvidia 6800 ultra or ATI x800 XT, both are good cards the Nvidia 6800 ultra . Check out this article:Ati Vs Nvidia Although these cards are the best ont he market they are necessarily the best value and it may be worth checking out the nvidia 6800 GT and the Ati x800 pro. I suppose it dpends on ytour current system specs in roder to judge if its worth while getting the very best video card.

HH, have you seen the ATI v Nvidia stats for HL2?

Ati kinda kicks nvidas ass all over the shop. You could argue that HL2 was desinged for ati stuff, but then as someone pointed out to me, the new games are always made for one or another maker.

I have always thought ati offer better value for money even if they are slightly behind on some benchmarks.

And the X800's dont require all that stupid amount of power the nvideas do. i.e. having a power lead thats connected to nothing else, and drawing a shedload of power.

So, my opinion is the X800, XT version if you want to really move.

However, there is a faster option....

You would need to get a motherboard with PCI express on, and get a pci express X800 XT. Thats probably the fastest thing you could possibly get.

I would offer you my old Radeon 8500 with 128 mbs Ram....collectors item surely as I do not think they were ever sold in this country.......I would even throw in a nice 9800 pro and free deliver and installation (have to offer good customer service!) ;) I would then go out and buy either the 6800 from nvidia or the x800 from ati!! I think they would both give you a meaningful increase!!

You could even afford a new mb and proccer if you are careful!!

my dual p4 3.2ghz does just fine :) with 1.5gb ram.

not sure if i can use pci express mobo is 7 months old

what I did was buy a Galaxy 6800 GT and clocked it past ultra speeds :D saving a good few quid too :D

Im running Halflife 2 1280x1024x32 MAXED 6xAA, 16xAS and scored 56.81FPS so please dont bash nVidia too much ;) this sounds more like a "My ATI is better than your nVidia" statement, both are VERY good cards and true, the 5x00FX series was pathetic, but nVidia got thier act together with the 6800 series :)

Image 1 is the game itself showing my settings
Image 2 is Counter Strike Source showing my settings (please note the Video stress test)
Image 3 is the result from the said stress test :)

Not at all, I think the nvidias are good cards, I just think they are too expensive. And the power requirments are a bit daft, imo.

Im certainly not one of fanboys that stick with one card, I got with whatever I think is best! :P

correct me if im wrong but doesnt the x800 series also have an extra power connecter too? but hey, who cares, I bought this card for games such as HL2 and boy I'm glad I did, lol :D i ran the stress test using basic settings but at the same res, and got 97.2fps but it sure looked ugly, maxed out the AA and AS as well as visual quality and what a difference, it was gorgeous, the water looks so real u would think you could cup your hand and have a drink, this game just oozes class, only niggle i have with it tho is that steam program when setting it up, its more a pain in the ar5e than anything else, and I have seen the x800 XT Pe (my mates) and it looks just the same, bloomin gorgeous :D

Yes it does, but Nvidea say you have to power it from a lead thats not attached to anything else (hard drive, optical drive etc) because it draws so much power off that line. The X800 doesnt need as much power.

But those 2 cards are so powerful, you aint going to get much that will lsow them down yet! :)

Im still using me 9800pro overclocked

Oh, and I totally agree with you about the steam program. If I wanted it to install crap in my systray, I would have asked it! Imagine if every game did that :hrmph:

a couple of screens from the stress test..

Image 1 = All setting at lowest :crap: yeuch
Image 2 = All setting at Max  including 16xAS 6xAA full reflections etc..

the pic doesnt do it justice tho :)
