one-off line deposit

Should a one-off line deposit (a month in advance) be additional to the monthly subscription to an ISP? In other words, if I terminate an account with an ISP after 2 months, is it normal to be expected to pay for 3 months?
I may be naive, but I thought the point about a deposit was that it was recoverable.
My situation is that I migrated to an ISP which turned out not to be what I expected. (The ISP's website describing their services was out of date.) After discussion on the phone, we agreed that I need not enter into an automated payment system, and I sent them a cheque for two months service (plus migration fee), thinking that was it. They sent my MAC code through the post with an invoice for a month I thought I'd already paid for.

Thanks

If it was referred to as a deposit then I would presume it should be returned or used to pay this invoice. Try to keep everything written down use emails or snails mail more than phone for your proof incase you need to defend this from the dreaded debt collectors with proof they are reasonable.
