Online Gaming

Hi,

Alot of ISP's have usage limits and I'm unsure of how much I will need.
(My exchange is enabled in May)
I don't download alot and search only a few sites, however I do play alot of games online.
By this I mean my own PC games and not Console.
My question is, does it use as much bandwidth with PC games as with console, and how much would it consume in say five hours of game play?

Please avoid "go unlimited" as this won't answer my question.

Regards,
Rare

The ONLY way to assess your useage is to d/load a Net-monitor program from somewhere like THIS.
In fact if I remember right the one I used was called just that; 'Netmonitor'.
And very good it was too.

HTH :)

As I live in the sticks, I can only get 512k :(

As in time scale, I mean 5 hrs a day

Does anyone play PC games online and used up their bandwidth?

Cheers.

Pipex are good for me £24 a month for unlimited usage. there minimum packasge is 1mb though but they would still be able to provide you with a 512 line altho you would still pay that price.

its the same with plusnet too, the billing is not longer speed related but is in fact usage related, so your connection will be put to its fastest possible speed be it 512k upto 2Mb with a 30GB Allowance :)

5hrs of gaming a day would get you know where near the 30gb PlusNet cap (think im correct in saying that) so i would agree, Plusnet or Pipex would be your best bet.

Nildram is probably the best provider in the UK in terms of network latency and thus multiplayer gaming. Data consumption is not an issue for multiplayer games, they consume almost no bandwidth during play.

Multiplayer games are more reliant on the time it takes tiny packets of data to swing around between your PC > The ISP > The Game Server... and back. The larger the packet the longer it takes to move, which does not work in multiplayer’s favour, consequently it is not a bandwidth eater.

Just steer well clear of any Datastream based ADSL connections, such as Tiscali, since they typically seem to have higher latency. Most are IP Stream though, so you should be fine.

At last the answer I've been looking for.... :D

Thanks alot guys for all your info.

I reckon PlusNet are one of the best ISPs for online gaming. I experience very low pings when gaming, typically 10-15ms.

Just for info, our PC is used mostly for on-line gaming, probably between 15-25 hours per week.

My eldest has Launch.com in the background while she does her homework.

So far I've never gone above 5Gig.

I'm on 512K, never had ping problems on European servers and usually get somewhere between 75 and 150 when playing on US East Coast servers. Seems high but it doesn't effect my gameplay.

Edit - Due to my prolific ISPr posting, my post count seems to go down each time I visit after they do a clear out.
