Hi, I want lo leave virgin after 20 years and have moved into a new property but I have just turned on the ont for the first time since I moved in last year and it has a solid red los light, I know it means los of service and I have no service yet but I am wondering if it could be somthing wrong with the cabling out side as I had nightmare with bt and adsl many years ago at there exchange and really dont want to go through all that again. Thanks

It just means there's no light coming through the fibre. If there is no active service agreement then I am not too surprised to hear that.

DSL is a totally different technology to full fibre. Fibre is a lot more reliable. It should be as simple as reactivating the connection, and maybe something being reconnected outside.

I don't anticipate any problems from what you have said. But it's always wise to sign up to an ISP that has good customer service so you can get them to easily address any problems for you should they ever arise. I'm sure you can understand that especially when you are a longstanding Virgin Media customer.

I'd say it probably depends on whose network this is - certainly if it's Openreach I can't imagine why they'd need to disconnect "inactive" ONTs from the network (and the ones I have access to have not been disconnected, it's all green lights even after being depowered for months at a time)

It should be relatively straightforward for Openreach to identify and fix the problem, so if you want FTTP, just go ahead and order it, and your service provider will call out an Openreach engineer if required.

But do keep the Virgin running in the mean time, just so you're not without service.

These days there is compensation (from most major providers) for every day that you're without service after the initial confirmed activation date, so if there is a delay in activating your service, you could be quids in.

Thanks every one, i must admit I am panicking a bit but virgin prices are just getting silly now and I don't expect much of a deal with retentions this week, so will order as soon as I have delt with them, thanks again every one for you advice.
