do you know the pricing for 5gbps then? doesnt say on they site

also can you show like a traceroute to 8.8.8.8/1.1.1.1/fastly.com, your the first person i seen on open infra network.

The Optyx site only gives the pricing for 8 Gbps (£128.90/month) and I'm paying £79.90/month for 2.5 Gbps so my guess is that 5 Gbps might be around £100/month.

I am on OpenInfra/Opyx. With the 950-950 service. Very happy with it, hardwired from PC to get these results.

My sig is also showing what we previously had with VDSL .... slight difference!

Thats pretty impressive making that huge jump, although speed isn't an issue here as we already got VM gigabit cable (although asymmetrical). Still though I think lots of people around my neighbourhood choose Open Infra cause of expensive VM pricing and basically zero competition here.

I wonder if there will be a local server in Colchester or will it route me all the way to London when it arrives. Not really a big deal at all but would be interesting.

Open infra use this company for peering. https://lg.twelve99.net/ so you take a lot at all of they routing/peering on that page.

You can check if they got one near you but not sure if they will even use it.

Just a final update after a few weeks now with the Open Infra service.

I posted previously Speedtest results of 2366 / 2306 but subsequently found out that this was limited by connecting the Open Infra provided ONT's 10G Ethernet port to the 2.5G Ethernet port on my Mikrotik RB5009.

If I instead connected the ONT to a Mikrotik CRS309 (with a 10Gtek 10G SPF+ module for lower power usage + heat output compared to Mikrotik's equivalent) and then a direct attach cable to the RB5009's single 10G DAC port (over which both the WAN/LAN is trunked from and then back to the CRS309), then Speedtest improves to 2514 / 2540.

Obviously that means if I ever have a faster fibre connection than (e.g.) 4G, then the RB5009 will need to be replaced with something with at least two 10G DAC ports.

Since going live with 2.5G with Open Infra a few weeks ago, the service went down for just over 24 hours due to (it seems) Open Infra engineers in the area working on other installs! I had to e-mail Open Infra and the problem was fixed the next morning. Hopefully this won't happen again!

Separately, I had 8-core single mode fibre (perhaps overkill but future proofing is good) installed in two runs around the house and the house networking upgraded from gigabit to 10G so that my main PC etc is hard wired to the fibre connection.

Overall, Open Infra has so far been largely positive and - hopefully - any additional speed required in the future will just be a simple / quick matter of a config change on their end for the additional speed down the same fibre / XGS-PON; plus any hardware upgrades on my side (save for the fibre cabling which should be fine for the next 10 years or more), i.e. a new router to replace the RB5009 as mentioned above plus any upgrade beyond 10G networking in the future.

very nice :)

Colchester Update:

Now they've started installation of the fibre ONTs so hopefully we get our service soon - no sign of roadworks yet on BIDB however.

It is the same 4 port Nokia ONTs that they've deployed so the setup should be all similar.

Attached is our ONT and exterior box if anyone is interested, we've repurposed an old cable point for a Sky satellite dish and used that to pull the fibre in.

Quite different exterior boxes they've used compared to other providers.

They've texted me a few days ago encouraging the people who haven't installed Open Infra boxes to do so now - apparently they have connected more than 60 properties around the area and taking a walk around, it seems like thats the case, their coverage seems to be much bigger than VX Fibre\LilaConnect.

Colchester has three altnets in the city now (Open Infra, VX Fiber\Lilaconnect and County Broadband, Openreach FTTP is practically non existent apart from really small areas although all of the postcodes I've been checking now switched to Openreach FTTP planned (except for where I live of course))

Today, another set of Open Infra people were on my street doing fibre splicing and general poling works so we are getting some traction now.

I did email them again and they said the "ambition" of network completion is at the end of May, so we'll wait until then.

Emailed Open Infra again, they state that they can't connect us even if the main network is done until the majority goes out of contract. This might take months to happen then. Looks like we're gonna be with Virgin for a very long time still.

From their email:
We do this because we can't say when everyone will be online on a exact date and a lot of customers have contracts with other providers.

We still do the installation so that everything is ready when you do go live.

Got mail that they have delayed installation indefinitely in Barnet due to “unforeseen challenges”.

Have they gone a bit CF, or maybe just spooked by OR announcement?

Not good for you guys, however hopefully that news means that OI will focus in Colchester after radio silence for a good couple of weeks. Everytime I emailed them I just get a generic reply and they haven't mailed anything out to us since last month.

However with OR expanding here quickly, I'm now thinking that will happen over here too...they haven't constructed anything here though, just their ONTs!

A bit of a lurker here but came across this thread after searching for any info about OpenInfra in Barnet. My last correspondence with them was back in April:

We have a few remaining details to address before we can commence service delivery. This may involve not having reached the required number of participating properties in your area or the planning and permitting phase not yet being finalised.

It’s gone silent since but seen lots of cable laying locally. Out of interest what area of Barnet are you from (didn’t read before - Mays Lane) did the email specifically say that installations had stopped throughout the whole of Barnet?
