Openreach Ducting work - weeks vs months?

A good friend of mine recently ordered FTTP from Talk Talk for this terraced house in south London.

Openreach visited this week and found that there was no space / very little existing ducting from the underpavement fibres to the house. There's no box on the external wall either.

So he's now waiting for OR to dig up the pavement and fit some proper ducting and the box.

Typically how long does this take? Talk Talk are useless and I suspect it will take local authority signoff too?

Any previous experience welcome

I fear we're into the "how long is a piece of string" territory with this one. Could be days, weeks or possibly even months, it depends on lots of different factors. From the rough description, it doesn't sound like we're talking about a long stretch of work (distance), but that hasn't stopped lengthy foot dragging before. However, if they need to dig up the pavement, then that rarely happens quickly.

If there's nothing from Openreach on the wall it implies there's no duct at all in which case they're going to need to dig from something in the street to his house through his garden.

The local authority are indeed going to need to be involved if that's the case.

Thanks Mark

Yes, appreciate it's super variable. It's about 3 feet from vent - if thats the term - to the front wall so not too far

Interestingly OR are always on our local streets doing work of some sort and we're a couple of km from the exchange. Maybe circumstantial but seems to be an aggressive rollout

Having active engineering resources in the area at the same time may speed things up.

Generally speaking, we see this process take 4-6 weeks in London regions.

If any encroachment of the pavement needs to take place, Openreach will need to seek local authority permission to work.

Just coming back to this subject. My pal is keen to speak to Openreach dig team to ask about the work as he has some questions about access - there's some elderly neighbours either side of his place and they were a bit worried etc

Do OR offer a contact? He couldnt find one only and was having a mare with their chatbot!

He would have to make the request via his ISP and they would request that a resource contact the customer to discuss.
