I had an interesting call from a scammer pretending to be from Openreach today. I started laughing at him, something that scammers really don't like ! I said I couldn't be bothered listening to him and hung up. Not to be put off, he rang back again and I asked him what was the purpose of the call. He said that hackers were operating on my area, and he at least had bothered to look up the name of the exchange area that he was calling, but didn't get much further into his script.
I asked him what ISP I was with, which he obviously didn't know, and he waffled on about representing multiple ISPs. He said he was calling from London. There was a fair amount of call centre background noise; I should have asked him if they were practising Covid spacing and how many of this colleagues were off with it.
In the end I asked him to call back when he knew my name but I haven't heard back from him since.
Where do you think he was going with this scam? I regret not letting him go a bit further. Was it an attempt to obtain my ISP login details or email details? It didn't seem that it could develop into a request for bank details.
