From last year a lot of Altnets slowed down their builds due to funding issues and/or market conditions. I was curious to see how this would impact their builds and whether this would give Openreach an edge. This numbers are hard to get and compare against each other but probably the best data available comes from thinkbroadband labs. I recorded these figures 8 months apart:
10-Feb-2024:
Alt Net FTTP: FTTP excluding Openreach, KCOM and Virgin Media RFOG 31.59%
Openreach/KCom FTTP: 41.14%
Difference: 9.55 percent points
10-Oct-2024
Alt Net FTTP: FTTP excluding Openreach, KCOM and Virgin Media RFOG 37.44%
Openreach/KCom FTTP: 48.08%
Difference: 10.64 percent points
Full Fibre (FTTP or FTTH): 70.84%
Openreach growth: 6.94 percent points. Which is a 16.9% growth from their 41.14% start.
Altnets growth: 5.85 percent points. Which is a 18.5% growth from their 31.59% start.
Obviously this is just two datapoints but based on the above it suggests Openreach is building at a faster rate than the Altnets (18.6% faster which comes from doing: (6.94 - 5.85) / 5.85 * 100).
And the Full Fibre being at 70.84% it seems the Openreach / Altnets overbuild is not that big considering 37.44% + 48.08% = 85.52% so only 15% is overbuild? I didn't record the Full Fibre value in Feb 2024 but if I use the March one and do the same calculation the overbuild was at 10.41%. This is expected as it means Openreach is overbuilding a lot in places Altnets got there first so this almost a 50% growth in overbuild. Where will this overbuild end is hard to measure...
