Orange blocks one of the biggest bit torrent trackers

<quote> Last Friday, reports started coming in from UK Orange Broadband users, all of them complaining that they can no longer access The Pirate Bay. Initially it seemed that the difficulties could be related to technical issues but as the days have passed, the situation hasn’t changed. Worryingly, the situation is mirrored by Orange customers in France who are also complaining the ‘bay is off-limits. </quote>

I can't access the site directly but i can through a proxy, also there other domain labaia.org isn't working.
I wonder if there jumping on board with the anti piracy groups???
Who knows? :crap:

Might have been there DNS.
I've tried orange's DNS servers, Im now on open DNS and still can't load the site.

I can ping it, but http traffic seems blocked

Hmm interesting, thanks for spotting/reporting this.

If it can be accessed using an anonymous Proxy, then it is NOT a DNS issue, it is being blocked; OpenDNS only stores the address, it doesn't provide the pathway to the site.

Vispa is not blocking the site (just checked).

in fact someone ping the IP, if its blocked then surely a ping to the site will show the same results.. if the same thing occurs its going to be either TPB or the ISP.... pretty simply either the ISP has blocked you or something weird is up on the TPB servers... or a mis-config in TPB's setup... lve had issues using IPtables firewalls and ended up blocking an ISP once due to sensitive settings... however this would be where a tracert would come in handy... mainly because if it was ISP end then the tracert l assume wouldnt leave the ISPs servers however if it was TPBs end then it would just end at their server...

a suggestion tho would be to find TPBs IP then write a fake entry in your hosts file, basically find their IP and then make up a fake domain to point the dns too locally... however this should only work if the IP is still accessible.

I've spoke to a few other people on orange, they also can't load the page.
Tracert didn't work either

traceroute to thepiratebay.org (83.140.65.11), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets

Well, this is my trace, done from my Vispa account, but using OpenDNS rather than Vispa's DNS server.

Tracing route to static.thepiratebay.org [83.140.65.41]
[ 1] ( 10.0.0.2 ) [ 1ms] local.gateway
[ 2] ( 213.120.198.41 ) [ 86ms] vispahg2.birmingham.broadband.bt.net
[ 3] ( 62.24.228.40 ) [ 99ms]
[ 4] ( 62.24.228.1 ) [ 31ms] rt-gw1.tcm.vispa.net.uk
[ 5] ( 64.208.205.169 ) [ 105ms]
[ 6] ( 67.17.79.18 ) [ 106ms] so7-0-0-2488M.ar1.ARN1.gblx.net
[ 7] ( 207.138.144.102 ) [ 68ms] port80.ge-2-0-0.407ar1.ARN1.gblx.net
[ 8] ( 83.140.65.41 ) [ 191ms]
-- Traceroute complete --

Several jumps are not reporting a name, which is unusual.

ld have been somewhat surprised if OpenDNS allowed access to TPB.

tho from Johno's tracert it looks like its blocked, didnt even get past the first hop, might be worth finding one of TPBs IPs and see if its pingable, some places use domain blocks tho unlikely there will be any difference cant say it isnt worth a try.

I use OpenDNS and have no probs getting to TPB.

If Orange have started a policy of blocking torrent sites then it is appalling that they have not seen fit to be honest about it and let their customers (and potential customers) know.

Well after a few days the site is now accessible, bit odd that orange blocked it but its back now.

isnt it common practice for most ISPs to implement things without telling their staff?

l know this is unrelated to Orange, but lve just started torrenting something from TPB well l started it yesterday and looked today, it seems according to my logs that the tracker has been inaccessible using BT.. and l mean ALL tracker urls.. while l can access the torrents pages l just cant seem to scrape the tracker for seeds and peers.. its like the subdomains they are hosted on are just plain timing out, yet lve just hooked up my Three modem, and its downloading fine now (tho a little slower than l would like, then again l cant complain have to curb my usage between 5am and 9pm.. plus l need to burn off some of my mobile bandwidth as l have it for backup as the net on the wireless lm accessing can be patchy sometimes)

Smeone somewhere is port blocking, I have had terrible download rates on all of the torrents I have tried for the last few weeks; I can find the trackers, but they are just not connecting for download purposes.
Eventually I disabled the "random port" option and manually went through every port available until I hit one that worked; suddenly I went from 1-4 kb/s to 30-40kb/s.
However, whoever is doing the blocking is also monitoring it's effects, because each port only works for a few hours before being blocked down to 1-4kb/s again :-(

Vispa say they do not block ports, but they do share some servers with other companies, so perhaps BT IS doing some blocking and it is spilling over onto Vispa's accounts.

lm assuming you know how to port forward? cuz that happened to me plus when choosing the port the more random and high the better l found.

(l think it was just me, TPB is scraping now)

yeah, I know what to do, it is just a pain, I can go to sleep with 150kb/s download speed and wake up to find that a few hours after I went to bed it suddenly dropped to 3-4kb/s, and it wont improve until I try a selection of random ports again.
