Orange/EE BB - Slow + Incorrect post code location

Hi All,

1st time poster so I hope I don’t do anything wrong!

I have a friend who lives in the same new build estate as me who discovered that what ever postcode system they use to allocate broadband speeds, has our postcodes in the wrong place. He is with Talk Talk and on their user forums he posted some info from his router and his attenuation and they rectified the problem. His BB went from around 2MB to 4MB. I have tried speaking to Orange on the phone and also sent an email which hasn’t been responded to and was looking to try and get some help.

If I remember rightly my friend used this calculator http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php and said my downstream
attenuation was 41.3 and I should get between 6MB and 8MB. Which is a massive difference to the 1.5/2.0MB we struggle to get at the moment?

Any help/advice/suggestions/next steps would be appreciated - Andrew

Hi Andrew it is more than just the ATT that governs your sync speed, I have a ATT of 34 but never get above 7MB on O2 network less on BT's.

Can you post your router stats so we can see a better picture of the line condition the noise etc.

Yes we really need to see your full connection stats, although Orange (EE) are known for having some of the slower fixed broadband performance in the market.

Also you might want to check through our ADSL Tips guide.

Hi Kits and MarkJ

Thanks for replying guys. I hope I this is what you are after its all new to me :)

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 658227 705576 0 217 2786 82:18:07
LAN 10M/100M 63742 2355 0 45 0 98:08:44
WLAN 54M/65M/150M 1018177 966190 0 3393 337 94:13:22

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2270 Kbps 1132 Kbps
Line Attenuation 41.4 dB 24.6 dB
Noise Margin 10.3 dB 5.5 dB

The 10.3 dB is high which causes you to have a lower sync.

The attenuation is fine but your noise margin is kind of the wrong way around. As kits suggests the downstream noise margin is high and indeed twice the upstream margin, when it should normally be the other way around.

A high noise margin on the download/downstream connection can suggest a problem with the voice side and one that might not be a fault in your home (could be an issue that's within BT's realm to fix). It's possible you might have a high resistance problem (HR fault) on the line, usually caused by corrosion in a joint or possibly by water/damp.

Sometimes a simple line test, which the ISP can conduct, will be able to show the fault but HR issues are tricky to pin down and BTOpenreach has a habit of missing them.

I'd also check your router logs to see if there have been any disconnections on the line as this would be related to the above issue and might be holding your line performance back. Check through that guide I linked and keep on at your ISP to investigate. If they don’t want to help then I’d consider a move.

Thanks both Kits and Mark, I was going to ask Kits how I go about reducing the noise but your reply clears it up nicely Mark. Thank you very much. I will continue to push and nag Orange.

Andrew
