OS X on Intel - Hacked !

Well that didn't take too long, even with Apple's TPM trickery ! Not more than a week or two after the full developer DVD torrent was leaked, people have OS X running in VMWare, and more recently (days) on motherboards with Intel 915 chipsets. Check out the exciting progress here - http://www.concretesurf.co.nz/osx86/index.php and here - irc://irc.osbetaarchive.com/OSx86 .

Can anyone else see a day when Apple will only be making the OS and the happy days of Apple Computers will be no more?

I might be missing the point here, but isn't it only the supplier of the processor that's changed here, or has the chipset changed over completely to Intel as well?

I would have thought the chipset would have to be changed to take the intel chip but I have been told that apple will put a ROM chip on the motherboard basicly like a bios chip that will have code on that if the OS detects that it isnt apple hardware it wont boot.

It may not be that easy for the hackers in future. What they've done is patch a file in the DVD that hooks into the TPM chip on the motherboard and normally stops the OS working properly if no chip is found. But even after this, in order to get everything working, they've basically resorted to buying standard Intel boards that are very similar (or the same)to the Dev Kit. Since Apple will produce their own boards it could be rather difficult to find an exact match (for the m'board) in future. We'll have to wait and see ... :hrmph:

I dont think it will work in future, i had a nice convo about this with a mac specialist today and they said more or less the same thing bob.

Build Your Own Mac for $199

Build Your Own Mac for $199

While it was always possible (although costly and time consuming) to cobble together a PowerPC Mac from old and new parts, hardly anyone did it. Now that Apple has introduced OS X for Intel processors, however, it’s conceivable that you could soon be building your own Mac from scratch.

One user, CEpeep, shopped around and found everything you’d need to build your own Intel Mac for under $200 - no rebates, no refurbs. Sure, the case is a little ghetto, it's only got a 20 gig hard drive, and it’s no Millennium Falcon in terms of speed, but it runs Quartz Extreme and everything else that Tiger x86 requires. Most of us could actually build one for less with a few spare parts we have lying around. Well, ok. Lying everywhere.

Obviously, there are still many reasons why you’ll want to buy a true Mac – Apple quality and support (and innovation), the current lack of a legal x86 OS X, etc. But it’s interesting to think that the days of the do-it-yourself Mac may be just around the corner.

The list:
Case - $9.95
Motherboard - $52.99
Processor - $60.77
2x 256 RAM - $38.00
20 Gigabyte HD - $25.95
DVD Drive - $12.00

Total: $199.66

P.S. The site seems to be having some problems as I post but hopefully will be back to normal soon ... :)
