Out with the old...

So the time is drawing near where i tell AOL what to go do with themselves. I think i'll hammer the connection and see if they throw me off, before my contract runs out...

The problem is, I know for certain my line is LLU, but my next supplier (either ADSL24 or UKFSN) will not be. I know there will be a connection charge from my new supplier, but what needs to happen with my connection?

Do I need to get AOL to clear my line before I even apply to my new ISP?

I'll probably have to dust off the old dial up modem for a few weeks, unless one of the companies i choose has a "back-up" dial up service.

Well it's goods news that I might not lose my connection for any length of time, but paying £40 is a PITA, I was going to spend that on RAM... :hrmph: (still a small price to pay to leave AOL though).

So if my contact runs out at the end of October and I have to give AOL 30 days notice, does that mean that I can give them notice at the end of September, or do I have to give them notice after my contract actually ends?

As for MAC codes, AOL's are valid for 30 days, so I give AOL 30 days notice and they give me a MAC. I then give the MAC to my new supplier and 30 days later, my AOL connection ceases, and my new supplier starts. Is it that easy?

Still 50/50 between ADSL24 and UKFSN, any reason to choose one over the other?

The way I read the contract if you cancel before the 12 months is up you don't have to provide 30 days notice, just pay off the remainder of the 12 months off. After 12 months you have to pay for the 30 day notice period.

Termination by You during any Minimum Commitment Period
You may terminate this Agreement during any Minimum Commitment Period, but you will still have to pay us the balance of payments due from you for the rest of such a Minimum Commitment Period. For example if you have agreed to a Minimum Commitment Period of 18 months and you terminate in month 7 then you will have to pay a cancellation charge equivalent to 11 monthly payments. We reserve the right to collect any such amounts as a single payment at any time on or after your first payment date subsequent to the cancellation of your AOL Access subscription.

AOL suckport said they counted the start date as the day I was supposed to be activated (10 days after I ordered). However they billed using the date I joined. The contract on the other hand states that the minimum periods starts "from your first billing date on an AOL Broadband price plan".

It should take roughly 10 days for a migration to complete from when you hand your mac code to your new ISP, unless there is a problem such as no spare ipstream ports at your exchange.

Can you get Sky/ukonline unbundled service or even better BE?

After you've been migrated check the AOL billing summary page to make sure your account has been closed, they didn't close mine. Also you don't have to tell AOL which ISP you are migrating to.

I wish I could get Be, but sadly I cant. I could get Sky unbundled, but I dont subscribe. UKonline's fair use policy is almost the same as AOL's, which rules them out completely...

Both UKFSN and ADSL24's 30GB (300GB off peak) allowance is fine for me, as long as they stick to them.

I'll wait until my contract actually finishes before I give notice to AOL, just to be on the safe side.

It would be wise not to use words like "cancel" or "cease" when you ring AOL, especially if you get india, just ask for your MAC code. I've seen the odd post by people whose lines have been ceased by mistake. I did have to select the "cancel" option on the phone system to get my mac though  but I did get put through very quickly for a change:)

AOL will tell that you you'll get it sent to your master screenname email account within two days. If it doesn't come ring back and you'll get an automatic message about a MAC having been issued, with an option to be put through to support. If your mac is read out over the phone it would be wise to ask them to email a copy too, the Irish rep I spoke to was good enough to email it to me and confirm I'd got it, shame the rest of AOL support isn't as good as that.

You can check if the account has been closed after you've migrated by logging in here with your master screen name:-
https://onlinebill.aolsvc.co.uk/you.../0/SummaryView/formCurrentBillingPeriod&sp=S0 it will either show your billing summary or inform you that the account is closed (I think it also gave an option to keep the email account).

I wrote telling them to close my account and withdrawing my authority to debit my card, but I didn't bother with recorded delivery and someone from the Irish support dept rang me, and closed the account while I was on the phone.

The cheapest sky tv option is £16 per month on top of the £10 if you want unlimited. You may be able to get £105 cashback from quidco http://www.quidco.com/sky-digital/ so it is not a bad deal. The downside is if you are not happy with their ADSL the TV would probably be considered a separate contract that you'd have to continue to pay for.

(if you use quidco, clear all cookies in your browser and make sure no commission stealling spy/adware is installed on your PC)

It might be worth waiting for the rumoured Sky "picnic" broadband packages which don't require a TV subscription.

Sky probably have a similar FUP to ukonline, but just because it sounds similar to AOL's doesn't mean it has anything like such tight allowances as AOL.
