Overloaded router?

Is it possible for a router to become "overloaded"?

When I have 4 or more devices using my router, just for general use, nothing heavy like P2P, it seems to take forever just to get the router settings page to load, and my connection speed takes a nosedive, even though the other devices are idle and not downloading anything.

I suppose what i'm asking is, could handling too many open connections affect a routers performance, even though there is very little data being transfered?

Could it even cause me to lose ADSL sync if the router gets too overloaded?

Update:

After a little research, it seems that the Netgear DG834G sometimes has issues with UPNP (Universal Plug and Play).

I disabled this and forwarded all ports manually. So far this seems to have improved things a lot, i'll see how things go. :)

Thanks for that, my pages now seem to load a little bit quicker. ;)

I used to think the DG834G was OK, but now i'm beginning to think it's just a little white box of crap.

At least the January sales start soon...

Nah the little Netgears are pretty good, although they did suffer some DOA problems a while ago.

However we don't deliver them with V4 firmware, rather V3.1 as it seems far more stable....

I didn't think you could run V3.x firmware on the dg834g V3 router as it has a different wireless chip to the V1&V2, or do you mean the non wireless version?

I only noticed the dg834g UI slowing down when I was getting a shedload of CRC errors or when it was trying to reconnect. Mind you I never used more than two pcs with it, both wired connections. They do tend to run cooler if you mount them vertically in their stand, which should boost stablity and reliabilty, but won't help with speed though :)

You can have up to 2048 entries in the routing table, although they do take time to expire after a connection is closed.

you know what, l noticed this same issue with slowness.. altho l experienced the same with my old modem turning off UPNP and it has helped in the fact l get less slowdown on my router than l used to.

Well, the router is almost 2 years old now, and has been running pretty much 24/7 all that time.

The problems only really started when I switched to my new provider, before that I was using AOL. Perhaps the router is just not used to handling a fast connection.

I suffer no slowdown/disconnects/sync losses at all when I use my old USB ADSL modem. Perhaps its time to either retire the router or limit the number of devices connected to it.

After a little more reading it seems that the DG834G power supply can sometimes end up sending the router as much as 17 volts instead of the normal 12 volts, causing the router to overheat and become unstable.

Just to test this, I used an old 12V 1A power supply from my old scanner, and hey presto, not a single loss of connection in 48 hours so far.

Just something else to look at if anyone else is having problems.

The other thing with the DG routers is the logs, when they fill up they can cause the router to hand, either log in and clear them every now and then or you can get it to email you the logs over once a week and just delete the email.

The only thing I set the router to log is for "router operations" so I can keep track of disconnects etc.

Almost 5 days and still no disconnects, so the log is pretty empty. :)

It's pretty conclusive now that the PSU was to blame.

Nope, you are right. My mistake, meant V1/2's with V3 firmware. Have to say I aren't the one that flashes and ships them ;)
