Own ONU

For those more in the IT space that like to roll their own/tinker, I'm curious to know if anyone has successfully used their own ONU?

In particular I’m looking at this.

Given the programmability of it, my assumption it should be somewhat easy to sub the provided ONU with this.

Reason I’m looking at it is it simplifies my setup; I can lose the copper component full stop, simplify the topology, and get some additional metrics visibility.

I'm sure that You themselves will probably scoff at it. Provided it meets their needs and they don't need to do much, if anything, I can't imaging they'd have too many issues with it, and I'm going to play the you-guys-have-screwed-this-up-enough-so-cut-me-some-slack card.

I had briefly considered something like this for my UDM Pro, but the reality is that my ONT is connected with a 1mtr patch cable - so it's not like I'm pushing up against the limits of CAT6a just yet lol - and it's a lot of money just for the sake of tinkering. I'd rather put the money towards a few upgrades elsewhere.

At the moment, my UDM pro is in a cupboard in the box bedroom - I'm looking to move it (and the ONT) to where the central hub of CAT6 & speaker runs for the house are. Doing that will let me have both "modem" and router on UPS protection and allow me to use the spare pair of OM4 cores to link the house switch to the 10GbE aggregation switch down the office, reducing the amount of switching work the UDM Pro needs to do.

To this end, I've been shopping for some goodies to extend the SC/APC single-mode fibre run from where the fibre enters the house to where I want the new comms rack to go. I reckon you might need something similar (depending on your setup, o'course!). A box like this next to the white fibre entry-point, paired with a run of SC fibre cable should do the trick.

Generic Compatible XGSPON Stick ONU with MAC SFP+ 1270nm-TX/1577nm-RX 10G-TX/10G-RX Class N1 20km IND DDM SC SMF Optical Transceiver Module

just one question, 20km will be enough?
Who know where are closest switch, router... .

To the OLT? More than likely. The optical specs are identical to the Adtran unit supplied. In an urban area, I don’t see how it would even be that far.

Our nearest Netomnia OLT is about 2km as the crow flies in the next small village over - I very much doubt there's many properties operating at the upper ends of the theoretical limit for singlemode OS2, so I reckon you'll be just fine!

Considering it's about 200km...one would hope not, or that's one poorly designed network. Not to mention the expense of the optics required would be prohibitive for residential use. Don't think there's any ONU that pushes past 20km anyway. But yeah, insofar as distance goes, no worries there at all.

EDIT:

I've got that ONU on order. It's a bit of a lead time and I'll be in the US about the time it's available so...ordered it for delivery there, with a bit of exchange rate savings to boot.

No real detail in that thread at all.

@XGS_Is_On can you shed any light into what you tested as alluded to?
When I changed the PON serial number I lost access to the SFP and couldn't regain it. Their support team were no help. The device generates the password based on the PON serial number and after I'd changed it neither they or I, it's a standard algorithm, could generate an appropriate serial number.

I'm not sure how the Adtran emulation is on this thing either. I couldn't see a way to trivially emulate it.

To gain console to it needs extremely fine soldering. To access the board to get at the pins to solder means forcibly removing the metal covering. At some point I'll go back to it and see if I can fix the issues but I need a very, very fine soldering iron at a very specific temperature range and I may have already burned the device out.

I have a good rapport with our FS folks to get some support on. For that particular model, I think they can do some factory pre-programming as well. One of those modules they explicitly mention that anyway.

That I would've very much benefited from. If you can get them to modify the serial, vendor ID, etc, to match what you need you should be good to go.

Netomnia aren't going to go out of their way to track you down. As long as you aren't breaking anything and the ONU responds to OMCI they don't care.

So I got a response from FS.

...for XGPON ONU Stick modules, it's not recommended or supported to modify their serial numbers. Any unauthorized modifications can lead to the device not functioning correctly.

Currently, FS XGPON Stick modules no longer allow the modification of their serial numbers. They come with unique, factory-assigned serial numbers that should not be altered.

Interestingly, for this item, it's explicitly mentioned that the ONU we're talking above should be used when asking about S/N changes.

Needless to say I've asked some follow up questions about how one goes about doing this.

EDIT: For the record, I've cancelled that order. FS no longer supports that. While I've seen the process on Hack GPON for this model, don't want to go down that road just yet. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to have technical conversations with the support team. Not like this would create any work on their side.
