Packet Loss Over the Atlantic

Hi,
We've been having a problem here with packet loss, it's most apparent when playing US based games with a lot going on when things grind to a halt, however, packet loss is present in MTR results taken at any time, see below.

We've spoken to BT who said there was nothing wrong with the line so it must be a hardware fault. After installing a new router the problem persists. Speedtest.net reports 8-11Mbps down and 0.6-0.8Mbps up which seems fine. Packet loss appears to be outside BTs network, can anyone advise what we should try next?

Sadly that does look like something which is going to be out of your direct control. If you're seeing a pattern where those specific USA servers always return high loss, while others around them continue to function normally, then there's not going to be much you can do.. unless I've misunderstood the problem.

ISPs can tweak the rout that traffic takes to avoid bad servers but it would usually take a larger number of people to complain before they would recognise a fault and adjust for it. I just ran a quick test myself on one of the choopa.net IP's at the end of your hop list and also noticed some casual loss, albeit not to the same level as you have reported above.

It might be worth asking on BT's own consumer forum whether others have had the same issue. Also remember that gaming on servers outside of the UK/EU is always going to be more unstable.

Now the strange thing is I can browse these websites without issue, even watch the live feeds of bc.edu webcams. Is it possible the servers displaying such high loss are really just throttling ICMP traffic, i.e. dropping any more than 1 ping in 10 seconds? This could explain why the loss decreases further down the line.

While playing on the Boston based server in the first MTR we normally have 0-0.5% loss and only when we enter areas with lots of combat do we see an increase to 15-20%. Although the traffic does increase in these areas they're still well within the capacity of the line as reported by speedtest.net. I ran a test just now on a Boston server and got 7Mbps down and 0.7Mbps up. This problem only started fairly recently, we used to be able to be in the exact same areas on the exact same hardware without any problems.

Packet Loss is annoying because as an end user it can be very difficult to know why it's happening. There could be some form of traffic management but it's really hard to say and congestion or faulty hardware at the remote server are more likely causes. In any case BT aren't the best ISP for multiplayer gaming. Have you run a tracert to see what the actual latency looks like?

As for the impact upon live feeds etc., well packet loss may or may not be noticeable here. Remember if a packet fails to be delivered then it's re-sent, which slows everything down a bit, but it could be that your casual latency is still reasonable except for the odd spike. Now unlike games, most webcams will "buffer" the content so you wouldn't necessarily notice any impact.

It is quite possible that a server/router/firewall may be set up to ignore ICMP ping requests from any given IP address from which it recieves more than a certain number in a given period of time, or to not respond to pings at-all.

EDIT: I just ran a new cable directly to the router and nothing changed. It's also a new router since these problems started.
 
Open a command prompt in windows (under Accessories) and type "ping 192.168.1.254" to see if that returns the same sort of result after "time". If you are on a wired network then pinging your gateway IP should return a result with practically no latency at all or at most 10-15ms (though even that is high for a gateway IP ping).

I do know that wireless networks can add some latency into the connection but not usually that much, at least not for a local network IP ping.

Aye, much lower like that (see post above). Maybe the router is just prompter replying to direct ping than to TTL exceeds.

Found lots of these in my firewall logs too:

Thumbs up for the BT home hub! I'll see if that's made any difference to the in game packet loss later tonight.
 
Ok, problems still happening in game despite completely clear traceroutes running at the same time.

Do you think it's possible BT is seeing a burst of UDP traffic and misclassifying it as file sharing then throttling it back? Going to try running MTR with UDP datagrams while we have loss to see if that shows anything.
 
I wouldn't run a TR at the same time as your game, the extra latency effect is noticable :) .. at least it has been when I tried. I have to be honest, without sitting in front of your computer and fiddling around for a few hours it would be very hard to guess at what is happening. It appears like part of the problem may exist on your network though. Hopefully one of the ISP Reps on here might have some better ideas because I don't know much about HomeHubs.
