PC lasted 6 days and then cracked up

Hello,

I'm mighty cheesed off. Got home tonight from work - flicked the new pc monitor on and was confronted by a blue screen!

Seems the hard drive has stopped working. It's a sata and I haven't another one to test the system.

So I only picked the system up last week and I have lost everything I had swapped over :(

Looking on the cclonline.com website I see they have a policy of testing for faulty items within 3-4 days if items purchased 7 days or after. As I purchased the item at 9.30am last Saturday I haven't had it 7 full days before it went pair-shaped.

I'll be there at 9am tomorrow asking for an exchange immediately!

I'm now using my antiquated pc to post this message.

It wasn't a Maxtor was it?

One thing to check with SATA's is the jumpers on the back, most ship with the default (no jumpers) attached and lock themselves into a certain mode. I've found this can cause bootup issues, even with Vista, though a good way to diagnose is to find out which pins enable 150Gbps compatibility mode and try those. The drive will be slower because it's not using all the methods it can but it may rule out some of the problems.

There's something to be said for having a backup of a backup too :) .

kinda weirds me out that everyone is so against maxtors.. been using them for years and not a problem (well once the computer blew up but l blame that on the fact my sister was using it) altho to be honest make doesnt really bother me its more "what is the most value for money" at the time

Imo Maxtors and lately Seagate drives are failing way too much. At work the most drives that fail are definitely Maxtor. (Seagate used to be ok but since they became one and the same I wont touch them) I Still have old IBM drives that are going strong from many moons ago. All the drives I buy now are Western Digital as they just seem to be that bit quieter and haven't had one fail yet.

ccl do have a right to test returns but as it is within 30 days you also have the right to demand a direct replacement or a refund assuming that there is no damage to it. Stick to your guns.

however a year back maxtors were pretty good value for money last time l baught a drive the (samsung was it) spinpoint (l think thats what it was) was pretty reasonably priced for the size.. the way l see it most will be going for the best value for money hence at one point maxtors were nicely priced and others slot into their places depending on deals and the value for money aspect which means depending on whats hot at the time users will have gone for that spesific make..

l for one have seen 1000s of maxtors only type of drive fitted to most systems at a local shop l used to lve near until another make was reasonable, so it stands to reason that maxtors might be somewhat touchy.. out of all my drives l have 80% maxtor 20% other misc drives and touch wood l havent had a problem yet that wasnt caused by normal usage (the time my system blew up due to a one in a million power surge doesnt count)

Well I took the pc back and as they didn't have time to check the h/d they gave me a new unit.

I'd moved/copied loads of stuff from old drives onto the new h/d which failed. I know you can recover stuff you delete but will there be a trace of what was on the old drives prior to moving stuff?

if you havent used the old drive too much then yes, the only time things are not recoverable is when:

1. you low level forma (return to factory default with the manufactures software)
2. rewrite every sector of the hard drive with new information

otherwise it should be recoverable with the right tools might just take some time.

For the future get yourself a cheap external USB hard drive and copy your important files to it. I recently bought a 250GB 2.5" external drive to back up the 250GB drive in my iMac - only about £55 including delivery. :hrmph:

Bob, I had an old h/d that I copied files from to another h/d which then failed. I need to know how to restore the files that were moved from the old drive. If they haven't been deleted then, although they have been moved elsewhere, they will still be on the drive.

what file system did you use? there is a software out there called getback for ntfs, l believe they do one for fat as well.. my friend used it a while back when he had a hard drive crash (his file system corrupted and once he accidentally formatted the wrong drive lol) or two and he as of yet hasnt found a drive it couldnt recover

Thanks for your comments.

I stuck the dodgy drive in an enclosure without the case and stuck a couple of ice cubes in a bag sitting on the drive ;)

I managed to get approx 99% of files from the drive laste night. Today I sent it to Seagate for an exchange.

seems luck was on your side ^_^, on another note f you get proper metal enclosures they tend to distribute heat better, the ones l got l purchased from here and they keep the drives amazingly cool

Had an email today - Seagate have despatched another drive :)

Sent on Tuesday - arrived at Seagate Wednesday - replacement posted Thursday.

Not bad service.
