Ping times for Virgin.net

Hi there i was wondering if there are any other users of the company that use these forums im looking for a tracert read out for www.bbc.co.uk

Im getting really bad ping rates i just wanted to know if it was my line or
the company.
Tracing route to www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.251.203]

I run a ping monitoring service and _all_ the Virgin.net lines I monitor have +200ms pings compared to every other broadband line!

I'm trying to get a response from them regarding the current problems but as it took five weeks for a reply last time then I don't hold out much hope. The earlier reports suggested problems would be resolve sometime in January, though Virgin's PR denied this, judging by the continued situation I'd think that's probably a more likely date than ever.

Well i have another line and signed up for fast.co.uk so lets see if i can wiggle out of virgin.I used to be on virgins dial up ages ago that was really crap back then.I only signed up with them this time because a freind recomended them (before they brought ntl).
The search goes on!

The reason the ping times are so bad, and specifically so at the first hop onto the VM ADSL network (note the use of 'BAM' in the FQDN, more on that in a min), is due to overloaded BT Centrals at the POP.

Where's many ISPs may have one POP at their data centre (eg. in docklands), Virgin Media has many throughout the UK. You can tell which one you are connected to by doing a tracert (you don't need a full one, just 'tracert -h 3 www.bbc.co.uk' should do it) and looking for the hop with '-bam-' in it. I believe that 'BAM' means 'Broadband Access Module'. Another term for this is 'gateway' - it is the hardware that joins BT's ATM network onto VM's IP network.

So, your 'BAM' is: brnt-bam-2.inet.ntl.com
Which I happen to know means 'Brent' (one of the London ones, I believe).

The reason the ping has peaked like that is due to overloading at this BAM. Allocation of BAM is done on a round-robin basis. So, it's possible for one to have a lot more load that the others. Once the BT Central hits saturation (of data) the BAM has to decide what traffic is going to make it through, and what won't. At first, it does this by delaying the data packets, until they can make it through. If things get really bad, then it will start to drop packets.

There is one workaround, but, I can't promise that it will work anymore, as pretty much the entire VM ADSL network is now overloaded.
1. Do a tracert to bbc.
2. Look at the latency at the 'BAM' hop.
3. If it is more than 100ms, continue. Otherwise, stop.
4. Logon to your modem/router's web administration pages.
5. Drop your ADSL link (don't just pull the cable, or reboot it - you must drop the link in a clean manner).
6. Reconnect your ADSL link.
7. Goto 1.

nb: This is going to take some time. I do have a script that will do this for you. Currently supports USB modems, Netgear DG834 (and GT's), and Belkin 7633 - with a little work, I can get it working on any modem/router that has control via Telnet.
For the script, either contact me, or google 'BazzasGoodBAMFinder'.

This was the latency to the Playstation Network over the weekend:

Needless to say, I've had it with Virgin Media's ADSL services. I'm off to Be on the 11th. And I can't wait to get stable pings, and think about online gaming once again.

ps: It's always great to find another fan of MRTG/RRDtool!!
