Pipex Pricing

With the AOL and BT changes over the last few days, my Pipex Solo 512K unlimited account is no longer looking like good value for money.

I have been with Pipex since the beginning of broadband time in my area [2.5 years] and don't really want to change as I have been very happy with their service.

However, I sure hope they soon come out with a new price list because otherwise they are going to lose a lot of customers.

Anyone heard anything?

Hi well i dont know much but what i can tell you is what they sent me after i emailed the press office.

"...PIPEX, like all major ISPs, will be ensuring that its customers are able to
take advantage of the speed improvements that BT are making on their network
and shall be announcing details very soon."

On that note i hope that means they will be making some changes. I will keep you posted.

Thanks creative, i was just about to put in my migration request, will stay put now and see what happens.

Thats basically what i said to them, many customer will see the recent regrade of service on other providers and simply migrate now to take advantage of higher speeds at the same price or lower even lower prices for what they currently do have.

Being in the same boat i hope that my speed will increase for the amount i pay each month, although on another note i can't say i have ever had one problem with my isp todate in 3 years.

As im on the 2mb package i can't see my speed increasing so only a price reduction, option of a static ip or better content (say sky sports broadband) will be enough to keep me there. Ive not had a problem with Pipex in my 13 months with being with them but i have to think with me wallet occasionaly. It seems 2mb was once the hight of geekyness now it appears everyone has it from BT to AOL.

Would be wary of any upgrades from Pipex, they're still on Standard charging (it's claimed over on ADSLGuide), so any upgrades will wind up costing them money.
Same deal with Zen et al..

Suspect this whole round of upgrades is a ploy to push the ISPs onto CBC (or UBC when it appears proper) in order to remain competitive. But then, given the costs in having high usage folks on CBC pipes, are price drops such a good idea?

Im happy to pay 39,99/month normaly but not when i can get the same service for much less. Im looking at either Metronet or Plusnet as i dont use more than 5gb/month.

as i listen to a lot of net radio it pushes the bandwidth way over most "lite" options with isp's. I think 30gb a month is the min. i could accept. If did cap it then i would prefer a fair usage, i.e maybe if you went over say this month and used within your limit next month then that would be acceptable. The ones that should be targeted if any are the constant ones that go over every month.
After all who can say how much i am going to use the net next month, i wouldnt want to be in the situation of dialup of having the same kind of limits put on me.

from what i've read this speed update is being offered by BT free of charge to qualifying ISP's of which Pipex is one.
Other than a possible upgrade charge of £15 per connection which Pipex may or may not decide to pass on to us.
As the 512k packages arent very competitive any more, certainly at the prices Pipex sell them at, an increase in speed is vital to avoid losing customers so I dont think they will pass on the cost.
I also hope that this wont lead to the service being capped, like Creative I listen to a lot of internet radio and a 100k stream soon eats up a lot of bandwidth.

Following my initial post I have this morning received the following reply from Pipex:

--------------------------------------------
We are aware of the broadband boom within our industry but we are also aware
that as one of the leading ISP's and broadband pioneers we have a strong
resilient background, network and support systems that can only be generated
with over a decade of experience and feedback by loyal customers like
yourself.

PIPEX has no intention of jeopardizing the quality of service that we
provide by participating in an unrealistic price war that focus purely on
generating a strong customer base with excessively low costs but without
looking towards the future of continuing the type of service that the
customer is accustomed to.

Let me just remind you of some of the features we provide you with as a
PIPEX customer.

Technical Support and Customers Services opening times of:

Monday - Friday:

09:00 - 20:00

Saturday:

09:00 - 18:00

Charged at local rate (not premium rate)

Excellent contention ratios 1:50 for Residential and 1:20 for Business

Free email accounts for all customers

Free web space for customers on or over solo 500 lite (50Mb)

Newsgroup access

These are just some of the many features you get as a PIPEX Customer as well
as the fact that our broadband service itself, is second to none.
