pipex

Hi guys I have been with pipex for seven months now all has been fine untill the last ten days.I am on a twelve month contract £29.99 a month that is for phone calls 24/7 plus line rental and broadband all inclusive. But speeds have dropt dramatically down as low as 128kbps they asked for speed tests which I have sent, the last two days the speed has crept up to 896kbps and
928kbps I am paying for up to 8 mg but normally my speeds will only reach 1.7mb because I am to far away from the exchange, is anyone else having trouble with pipex.
Arthur

Arthur, I am finding it hard to understand your meaning here...first you tell us all was fine until the last 10 days and then you tell us you "normally" only get 1.7mb because of the distance you are from the exchange....
Now firstly could you tell us all ...
what sort of speeds you were getting BEFORE the "last ten days"? ...
What time of day were you getting those speeds..
and
what are the speeds at those same times now?... Such info would help others form a before/after comparison to judge if anything dramatic is indeed happening with Pipex et-al or whether perhaps it is a local problem that perhaps only you seem to be experiencing.:)

Sorry you are having trouble understanding my post. The speeds I was getting before the upset 10 days ago where 1.4mp to 1.7mb pipex say my line will only support 2.0mb. this morning the speed is ruining at 896kbps but has been as low as 128kbps. Have sent speed tests to pipex but no joy as yet

Thanks for that Arthur, I now understand ...let me see if I can put this into context ...

#1. You are on an UP-TO 8mbps package
#2. Your line (according to Pipex) can only support UP-TO 2mbps
#3. Previously you 'enjoyed speeds of anything up to 1.7mbps & sometimes as low as 1.4mbps (both acceptable on a line only capable of UP TO 2meg)
#4. Your speed is now fluctuating between approx 128kbps and 896kbps and has been so for the past 10 days.
Right...all things being equal...
I have to ask....is there plenty of capacity at your exchange...or has it <sarcasm mode>like thousands of others fallen prey to the oversubscribed-in-need-of-upgrading bug that BT exchanges seem to be afflicted with these days?...</sarcasm mode>...
Also...why on earth are you on an up to 8meg package when IMHO a 2meg one could perhaps be better suited to your line/distance from exchange scenario?
Did Pipex tell you your line could only support 2mbps before you signed up, or did you mistakenly think perhaps, that upgrading to a 8meg connection package would miraculously speed up your previously slow line rate?
(You wouldn't be the first and undoubtedly will not be the last to fall for the 'up to 8 meg carrot')
Don't get me wrong...I'm not having a go at you, I'm just trying to get to the logic behind why anyone would be subscribing to a package that their line /distance from the exchange could never handle is all.:)

tracker, a lot of providers don't even offer a 2 meg connection any longer, why do it when they can charge more for and 8 meg and know that the user will never be able to use a fraction of it.?
Also, the chances of Pipex doing anything about it are very low, even if you can prove there is a problem; hold-on to the little you've got, bite the bullet and move as soon as your 12 months is up; Tiscali have their teeth into Pipex now, and no good will come of it.
(Ex Pipex customer, they have always had cr@p customer service, but at least they USED to have good connection speeds).

Hi - I've been with Pipex for over 3 years now. I've had the odd problem in the past when I couldn't keep a connection for any more than 5 minutes - but it usually sorted itself out after a week or so. But I have also noticed changes in connection speed and disconnections this past week. I've tied my problems down to 'file sharing'. I've noticed that if I connect and don't file share, that things are ok, but as soon as I start to download using bittorrents, then after about 5 minutes speeds slow right down and then I get disconnected. Could be that Pipex are starting to monitor and block file-sharers ?

Nooooo, but I expect Tiscali are, they have been taking over the handling of the Pipex servers for quite a while; long before the announced buyout.
Homecall, a supposed Pipex company have had Tiscali running their servers since last year.

i've been with pipex for almost a year now and thank lord its bloody over soon , they have been a nightmare isp for serious dl and gamers , my previous isp were BT , Bulldog and Plus-net all have been decent , i live in south woodford which is not too far from the exchange i get an avrg of 5mb and max 7mb but the dl speed dont match "why?" i asked even tho im on their highest package they throttle my line to 100kb-200kb at times between 2am to 4pm and during peak hours they throttle the line to a ridiculous 0kb-10kb because of their fair use policy(why pay xtra then) and for gamers..... well i havent played online since i've joined them because pipex has the worst online combo ever 1.Lagging 2.Cut-off's it wont last more than 5mins i do everything to improve the line like assigning ports and stuff but it makes no difference their support team are next to useless and rude some are lairs too.

well atleast i wont have anything to do with pipex or hoff anymore the only good thing i have to say about them is if u dont dl or play games its ok isp but so with all the other providers why chose them , i will give BE a try next month prob post a little review after a month with them.

Indeed...but if Arthur is still looking in, I would appreciate his input to the questions I asked him.:)

Hi tracker
The answer to you question, when I signed up with pipex you could only take the up to 8mg,but as I say for the first 7 months had no problems.Could it have something to do with tiscali now on board.

Cheers Arthur, the other question was...
..is there plenty of capacity at your exchange...
You would be surprised to learn that the number of exchanges that BT need to upgrade now number in the THOUSANDS...congestion is one cause of a slowdown in connection speeds (although to ward off pedants;), I should qualify that to say that congestion may not be your problem but it is worth considering as a POSSIBLE cause)
I very much doubt if the involvement with Tiscali has anything to do with things...but if the wrong kind of snow or leaves on the line can halt train services..I concede it may be possible!

When Tiscali buys another ISP they'll no doubt be moving anyone left on BT's Ipstream network onto their own LLU and Datascream connections if they are available at the exchange...

"Datascream" lol

I have been with pipex for 11 months now, i can finally move on next month, my download speeds are good in the morning ranging up to 600kbps from p2p, but come about 12 midday, then im lucky to be hitting 10 kbps, i am addicted to the battlefield series online, now i can play in the mornings and midday ok, but if i want a game at nights then forget about that, i just cant wait to go to fast.co.uk, anyone else with them can tell me what they are like

arthurp,

I was with Pipex Homecall, which sounds like the same beast at the same price as you've got. They used Tiscali servers and I'm guessing yours will too. An employee told me that if you used more than 0.75 Gig per week during peak time (between 5 to 11pm, 7 days a week) you got put on one of the "bad boy" servers. This resulted in very slow speeds indeed 24/7.

Regardless of this I found they throttled something rotten during peak times and during the day at weekends was'nt too good, either. My advice is leave ASAP and go with LLU if you can.

Sorry for the delay in responding barndog.

LLU is short for local loop unbundling. Many ISP's use IPStream, which is another animal. Without going into details my supplier (Sky) offers services on packages called Max, Mid and Connect. The first two are LLU whilst the latter is IPStream. LLU for Sky (and for UKOnline) use the services provided by a firm called EasyNet. EasyNet are one of the biggest owner of fibre throughout the country and plenty of it is held in reserve. LLU also involves the ISP concerned to install their own DSLAM at the local exchange. Thus, as you can see, if LLU is operational, BT are only responsible for the line up to the exchange. This has several distinct advantages but the main one is, perhaps, that speeds higher than 8 Mb/s downstream along with higher speeds upstream are possible because the LLU suppliers *can* use ADSL2+. At present BT only operate via ADSL Max and are consequently limited as to the speeds they can supply. The suppliers, perhaps ironically, who appear in the top ten lists on most sites have to rent their "centrals" from BT and this is expensive. Therefore LLU suppliers can often supply great products relatively cheaply. Their are many other advantages to LLU.

This could be quite a long post but I'm sure you can find out more elsewhere!
:)
All the best,
Graham
PS. My signature shows what I can get and these speeds, for me, are obtainable 24/7. I.E. No contention, throttling, profiles, port-blocking, etc.
