Plagued by calls from 150 after VOIP switch

Hey all. A while back I moved my landline number from our TalkTalk contract (FTTC) over to Sipgate. I’m using a Gradwell box between my router & old BT/Openreach phones. A few times now, our number has ‘unregistered’ within Gradwell and I’ve had to reregister it using the info from Sipgate. I’ve noticed that when the number was unregistered, I was receiving calls from ‘90000’. These calls were silent when answered and would come through around midnight, and they don’t show within the Sipgate log, only the Gradwell log.

Since reregistering my number today, I’ve received maybe 20 calls from ‘150’ in a row. All silent when answering and unable to dial back, it just rings and then I get the repetitive beeping.

Does anyone know what these two numbers are, or why they’re calling and why they wouldn’t show in Sipgate? Otherwise, everything is functioning as expected but the landline ringing every 30 seconds is not ideal!

150 is the BT Consumer Customer disservice number when calling from a BT line, also available as 0800 800 150.

Can't comment about 90000.

This makes me think of...

I wonder if there is someone poking about using your SIP Creds or something!

Tell me more about the Gradwell device, does it allow you to secure it to your sip provider only, does it reject anonymous calls, how old is the firmware.

You have someone poking it from the internet, and possibly forcing the deregistration.

Hey, it's a Grandstream HT801- got mixed up, not Gradwell! I'm not sure on firmware although it is set to auto-update so I'd imagine its as updated as it can be.

Reject anonymous calls, not as far as I'm aware. I can't answer on securing it to just my sip provider, sorry!

If you have a SIP account that you register with a username and password then you shouldn't need to punch holes through your firewall as long as you've set the NAT keepalive values to something sensible. It sounds like you have inbound 5060 coming straight into your ATA from anywhere on the internet.

I have Sipgate numbers too and I only use VOIP apps (e.g. Zoiper) to connect to them on my Android phones, so maybe that may interest you.

Even if BT could somehow present that as a caller ID outside of their network, they wouldn't - they'd probably use 0800 3289393 which goes to a recording explaining such

I'd also agree that it's some sort of security issue. (and perhaps worth noting that this is one of the reasons why BT, Sky, etc insist on using their equipment and why they won't give you the SIP credentials, at least in the consumer realm)
