Plus Net Service?

Maybe in the years to come 200gb will be a small amount of data to download (when Internet TV becomes the norm)

It may be sooner than you think With the advent of VoD :)

My form of heavy usage is something like 20gigs most a month, probably not even that to be honest. But 200/300gigs a month surely is taking the p**s. Does anyone else think 20 gigs a month is condemmed as a heavy user?

No 20 gigs is average most are expecting around 30gigs a month some allow 50 gigs some are just a FUP not really capped

nothing thankfully, with 4 computers and an xbox sharing the 1 connection bandwidth gets used up fast, the meter was plusnets own Usage meter on thier website :)

hows does consoles work? Do you have to pay extra for them?
Only for XBox Live but as my xbox is modded, I have to use tunneling via XBConnect using XLink

"the meter was plusnets own Usage meter on thier website "
that would include uploads as well though.

Plus really have got themselves in a mess with their customers, they did want anybody to build up their base and then decided that they did not want the high users (seen all this with the old dial up and F***24) and changed their terms to dump them. Trouble is they seem to have upset the low and middle users as well. Those on 2MB look as though they will soon be paying the same as people who at present are on less when they get free upgrades and if they want to go onto a lower priced product because of this they are having to pay £15. Many low users, like myself, have discovered that they are paying over the top for their low usage, with the advent of stats, and having their attention drawn to it with the new products and they are being told they have to pay to change down, despite their being no other product when they signed up. Also Plus seemed to tell people that all speed upgrades would be in April and then said months after April and also suggested many would soon get more than 2MB, when this was about a small BT trial. All in all their is a significant number who are unhappy and some confused, CS have today had to ask how Plus will deal with one of their products when upgrades happen. As customers realise something is happening, they are coming onto the forums at Plus to ask the same old questions, but the numbers of those unhappy and forum posting at Plus seems to be growing. Stay out at least until some of this is resolved is my advice for what its worth.

Hi there,

I would like to add some clarification on a number of the points raised in this thread as there appears to be some confusion and misinformation.

From Monday we will be offering 3 distinct products:-

Broadband Pay As You Go (formerly 'Lite'), £14.99 per month
----------------------------------------------------------
-You will be provided on the maximum speed available
-Pay As You Go for data transfer
-1GB download inclusive
-£1.00 per additional GB Prepay, or £1.25/GB to Pay As You Go
-Ideal for infrequent or light users who want the fastest speeds available.

* New * Broadband Plus, from £14.99 per month
----------------------------------------------
-Fixed monthly cost
-No fair usage limits
-High bandwidth activities, such as p2p, speed restricted during peak times
-Ideal for those customers who want straight-forward and fast Internet
-Pay for speed, not usage

Speed | Price
512Kb | £14.99 (Inc Vat)
1Mb | £19.99 (Inc Vat)
2Mb | £24.99 (Inc Vat)
Up to 8Mb | TBC

Broadband Premier, Priced From £21.99
-------------------------------------
-Maximum speed (Max DSL, up to 8Mb later in 2005)
-Fixed cost
-No traffic shaping or speed restrictions applied
-Highest performance delivery
-Generous fair usage policy
-Ideal for families using multiple computers on one connection, and for downloading and streaming media and running high bandwidth applications

Price Fair usage thresholds:-
£21.99 30GB per month peak time, potential inc off-peak usage of 230GB*
£29.99 50GB per month peak time, potential inc off-peak usage of 250GB*
£39.99 75GB per month peak time, potential inc off-peak usage of 275GB*
£49.99 100GB per month peak time,

* Off-peak is between 1am and 8am. The potential off-peak usage is based on a 2Mb broadband connection and all figures are download only.

Our Fair Usage Policy is not a hard cap and works on a 'three cards and your out' type policy. For those unfamiliar with it, I suggest you take a look at http://www.plus.net/features/usage_guide.shtml

I think the majority will see this as very lenient and allows for the downloading of copious amounts of data as long as it is managed and not persistent.

I disagree with any suggestion that the majority of our userbase are disatisfied with the imminent changes. We have recently submitted a bulk regrade to BT requesting that all our existing customers are upgraded to the highest speed their line will accomodate (up to 2MB). Customers are not getting charged for this and almost everyone will have seen a speed increase before June.

New Pay As You Go and Premier customers are automatically provided at the highest speed their line will support.

In addition to this we have just announced that we have contacted the first group of our customers asking whether they would like to accept a place in BTs MaxDSL trials (download speeds up to 8MB). Upon expansion and successful completion of the trial, we will be offering more customers the higher speeds as they are made available at their exchanges (again free of charge). For more details, see here http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1112192855.htm

If anyone has any concerns or is unsure about any aspect of our service or policies then I will be happy to address them.

Kind Regards,

This is not what I said, Bob, I said
"All in all their is a significant number who are unhappy and some confused"
Many of your 2MB customers are unhappy, others are at the way you have handled this. New customers come onto the PN forum asking the old questions because they are confused and new people come on complaining at what is happening.

Through this forum I signed up with PN because it was impossible to find anyone who was unhappy with their service, speeds etc, but not anymore. I have commended them, but not any more.

Hi Bob,
I dont understand why plus.net would offer soo many packages? Surely this is more than confusion for existing and new customers. Also, if i was to sign up i would ultimately for for a 1meg download and most likely the premier package. However, i noticed that your off peak times are really late hence 1gig download a day during peak times is not really sufficient to be honest.

I use to be a big fan of plus.net but it seems that the company is offering multiple products that is hard to keep up to date with.

We are only offering 3 ADSL products. If 1GB/day isn't sufficient for our users then there are higher usage brackets available.

We can offer a suitable product for 99% of the ADSL userbase. There are a small fraction of ADSL users who have a requirement to download large amounts of data, consistently irrespective of the time of day. Our FUP allows for this to a certain extent. A customer could download 600GB per month for 2 months even on the £21.99/mnth product as long as they stay within the guidelines for the third month (which still allows potential downloads in excess of 200GB). Our FUP is without a shadow of a doubt entirely reasonable IMHO. There is a minority for which we do not have a suitable product. These are the consistently heavy downloaders and form less that 0.3% of our overall customer base.

We are charged by BTW on capacity, ie how much data our users consume. It makes perfect sense therefore to charge our customers in exactly the same fashion. We no longer charge for speed.

I will reiterate what I have said before - If anyone is confused by the proposed products then please feel free to contact me. Rest assured it will become clearer when the products are rolled out live on Monday.

Kind Regards,

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. I have looked into the options available and fair enough the usage policys are fair. But When you mean for example 30 gigs is not hard capped, how lenient are you guys prepared to go on this? For example if i download 40 gigs on the 1st month and say 32 the next and then 20 on the 3rd month what would happen?? I like to download stuff when i can and generally i do this whilst im preparing to go to bed around 11pm in which i would leave on throughout the net day until i get back from work!
I have looked at pipex and zen and they have not introduced any capping yet.

"download 40 gigs on the 1st month and say 32 the next and then 20 on the 3rd month "

Just this situation is postulated in their explanation and they therefore go on to tell you if the following happens...

"However, in month 4 the customer exceeds their account’s Fair Usage and Level 2 status is applied again. Then during month 5 the customer once more exceeds Fair Usage. Level 3 status is applied and a 150k speed restriction is automatically imposed on all downloads. "

That might be a soft cap, but it is still a cap and if you hit it it will feel hard.

When I joined with the product I pay for NO limits were applied, but they are now for whatever they say FUP limits use.

For example if i download 40 gigs on the 1st month...
Fair usage level 1 - Nothing happens

...and say 32 the next...
Fair usage level 2 - Nothing happens

...and then 20 on the 3rd month what would happen?
Back down to Fair usage level 1 - Nothing happens

Remember, we monitor download only. Your uploads are not included. In addition to this, any data transfer between 1am and 8am is not counted towards your usage.

Fair enough but i would find it hard to monitor how much downloads i am doing. Perhaps if the off peak started around 7/8pm that would be great :)

It certainly would but that's not going to happen just yet I don't think ;)

By the by, I've seen the revised 'View My Usage' tools for when the new products are rolled out and they're pretty damn comprehensive.

But isnt that going over the capped limit???? So why would there be no action???
