I hang my head in shame, I saw that ManOfMeans and actually laughed  how juvenile of me.

You never know, it could have been an ex employee too causing some grief. They couldn't ban him for that alone, but it would be possibly if two of the voluntary moderators resigned (as they might have known him as a staff member previously)

Forums and connection should be kept seperate. If some people are causing a problem, thats what the moderators are for, to sort them out or ban them from the forum.

Plusnet are hiding something, be it a stroppy staff member with too much power, or didnt like what the people whom got kicked kept saying.

I get the impression the customer was unhapy with Plusnet, surely he'd be happy to get a free MAC number and encouraged to go. If he was happy with the service, why did he hang around and cause so much grief on their forums?

Well from what I read on their boards he didn't have much of a problem himself but tended to stick up for other people who did. He was also very negative about anything they recently brought in, such as the idle cut offs. Some people thought he was justified and others thought he was going way overboard with his posts. You can guarantee one thing though. The ISP will have done their homework and will cover their backs legally either way.

ive never heard of anyone doing idle cut offs before, how long before customers get cut off?

i think its a terrible idea for a connection that is supposed to be 'always on'

30 minute cut-off. And if the connection hasn't been used for 30 minutes, then it's probably not in use so there's really no need for it to be connected.

Could always configure Outlook to check for mail every 5 or 10 minutes to keep the connection active if it's important to be online.

rather have it on to be honest, if im not using it then theres not any traffic going through anyway, so why should i be disconnected

They said it was something to do with network capacity. Too many inactive connections stopping others connecting. Maybe they should invest a bit more into their infrastructure.

As I understand it the pipes have session limits and the alternative i.e. adding a new pipe , costs an arm and a leg - hence timeouts.

It was suggested over at ADSLGuide that adding a new central (622 Mb pipe), that could hold another 25,000 users, would cost around £1.4 million/year.

a session is terminated by the ISP end device, ie LNS, BT> tunnel switch it to the end points, an isp could have as many ppp sessions as they want going on at the same time, even using a cisco 2821, you can terminate a hell of lot of dsl sessions, so therefore this isnt the issue.

The only restriction BT have is the number of end users provisioned on a central pipe.

someone mentioned earlier that bt pipes have session timeouts/restrictions, they dont.

the issue is silly isps finding silly ways to stop any extra traffic on thier network, plusnet seem to be one of the pioneers of the new trends being seen, there is absolutely no need to terminate idle sessions.

the only good use i see of it is that it does clean up your router , sometimes you can get stale sessions, so it is useful as troubleshooting because you know for sure a partcular user has been passing traffic for that particular idle period.
