Plusnet Download Limit Warning

Plusnet Home Premier is not UNLIMITED DOWNLOAD anymore as there are restrict on it.

Max download on ADSL Home Premier Service:

0.5Mbps 170GB (85GB LIMIT in a 3 months period) (28GB a month)
1Mbps 340GB (170GB LIMIT in a 3 months period) (56GB a month)
2Mbps 680GB (340GB LIMIT in a 3 months period) (113GB a month)

If anyones was over the limit after 3 months period, Plusnet will send out a warning email to customer to watch out on their usages bandwidth! Plusnet would give customer a 3 warning emails (level 1, 2 and 3) before giving the fourth and final warning !

I haven't got my warning email yet as I am happy with Plusnet 2 Megabit as I think I can manage with up to 100GB download a month (only if I got time away from work)

Well that just plain sucks.. the only reason i went with plusnet was because of no restrictions.. oh and the good service level.
If i get warned ill jump ship when my contract is over.

Didnt take long for them to turn 0.3% into 100% did it?

Huh? They said that 0.3% of customers would be affected by the caps, not that they would only apply to 0.3%.

Given that other ISp's are using caps of just a few gig, a min. 28gig doesn't seem that bad to me.

problem is, when i signed up for plusnet, it was on the provision of uncapped, now they change the T&C's and I have now got keep my eye on the limit im downloading/uploading, and with 4 computers sharing the 1 connection, 113 GB can go fast :(

True and wehad this with NTL last year when they suddenly put a 1 gig a day.. I have to say though I never had an email of them and now it is more if I upgrade to t he new 3mb package. Look at whats on ofer there could be one that suit s your needs. Or its off to Datastream as they are not going to cap theirs

you see, what did i say????

Yes, and it's the combination of those vocal and idiotic (judging by their pathetic rants on ADSLGuide) 0.3% and the change in BT charging that have caused Plusnet to do this. A lot of the "Bad Boys" have run to Zen - let's see how long it takes for Zen to introduce caps ...

EDIT: Bulldog where exactly is your source/post for these limits because I'm seeing no mention of it elsewhere ?

I get these information from the customer support senior manager because I was confused over plusnet new usage limit as my 2 Megabit 113GB a month sound fair to me, but I think many isps will soon be capped after BT had spoil it by charged isps of overload download limit. Only TELEWEST BROADBAND will not going to put any cap on it in the future, I might join TELEWEST 4 Megabit for £50 a month.

They do seem to have done a U Turn on this. The orginal anouncement clearly stated only 0.3% would be affected and stated typical amounts these people were using which were well over a 100G a month. Now a few weeks
later there is a limit of 85G in a 3 month period.

Clearly far more then 0.3% will be afected by this. A Black mark for Plusnet over this. If limits were being imposed then they should have stated that at the time.

My personal advice to people with Plusnet is that they should consider moving to another ISP. If they have mislead people once there is a good chance they will do it again. Who is to know as well if they will not just changes the rules yet again next week. The trust has gone with Plusnet.

Hi,

I'm very interested to where this information has come from, if you want email me the name (dtomlinson@plus.net) I'd very much appreciate it because the information you've given is completely false.

We have no set limits on our accounts and certainly no warning mechanism on broadband like you suggest. There is one on our FRIACO accounts so maybe this is where the confusion has come from.

We don't advertise the accounts as unlimited, as they are contended accounts, but neither do we have hard caps in place like you describe.

Hello Dave
Could you please email Mark.J to have this membership changed to an ISP reps membership.

 bulldog, please give more information on the person who quoted these ridiculous false limits.
Plusnet have not imposed any limits or caps on the premier services, instead taking the lead in actively managing the 0.3% of the user base making very high use of the network, to the detriment of others.
As far as I can see, nobody has quoted any limit, either on or off the record, and the figures you have given, particularly for the 512 speeds, are just laughable.
Should plusnet impose set limits at any time in the future, then this would be openly communicated to all customers.

I too would love to know where this came from.

Clearly someone has made a huge mistake

Can imagine the debate at Plus Net Towers Monday morning.

Wonder if the legal team would be interested?

Hi everyones, I will contact Plusnet Customer Service Manager on Monday to send me the information by email, then I will attachment on this forum soon. I am sure that they didn't false me or I will be ANGRY with them if they had mislead me.

Other isps 30GB or more is count as UNLIMITED other under 30GB is work out usages limit per GB per prices. I don't understand really from Plusnet as if we did more than 30GB in a month, it should be UNLIMITED because other isps does charged the same prices on our 512k, 1 Meg and 2 Meg. I cannot get information unless the manager on Monday can forward to my email and I will ask for his FULL NAME too.

Sorry if I had confused everyones, I was confused too.

Confused?

Where does that come in to it.

What you posted was fairly specific. It did not leave much room for confusion.

I look forward with interest to your explaination on Monday and the identification of this "manager" you spoke with.

Regards

Mark

I had email plusnet customer service about the download limit and they had reply to me by email

Dear Customer

We do not apply a fixed cap on Premier accounts. If you were to continually download in excess of 113GB/mnth it may be seen as excessive use. I would recommend you read our recent service status postings:-

Kind Regards,

Plusnet Customer Service

WELL, NOT MUCH THEY SAY ABOUT IT ???

I had to ring them up tomorrow morning to find out more!

I hadn't read that link before. It provides a really good explanation of why Plusnet took the action it did against the 0.3% "Bad Boys" -

...PlusNet have always aimed to provide a high quality of service at a competitive price. The customers we identified during this exercise were using more capacity than was available on a central pipe, which costs us just over £31,000 ex VAT per month each ...

and also

...It is important to understand that the wholesale cost for Broadband is
made up of £8.40 (ex VAT) per month per customer for the local loop
component and £31,130 (ex VAT) per month per 155Mb segment of a 622Mb
central pipe (BT broadband network transit). Depending on customer mix
and product mix, typically between 4000 and 10000 customers may be
serviced per segment. ...

So around 240 people were using the kind of capacity that might otherwise be used by 4000 people or more !

What I would like to know is what the heck are they downloading, to use up to 640GB a month?. I think an approach that Plusnet should adopt is to give a specified amount for customers to download per month. Once that limit is reached, then Plus should start charging by the GB, thus allowing heavy downloaders as much as they want, execpt making them pay for the extra they use.

I see this as a perfect way, as the heavy users then pay for the extra bandwith they require, and the extra funding can pay for the additional capacity theat Plusnet need for these users. I think however that this would curb the 600GB crew as paying by the GB might defer them from connection hammering 24/7.

But we do need to see some capping of sorts before the whole system becomes unviable. There are always going to be people that think they should be getting flat out rates all the time, but these people dont see how the system works, they are only concerned with downloading all day and night which is unsustainable by any ISP.
