Plusnet Download Limit Warning

Demon said:
I feel sorry for Plusnet, they've got themselves into a no-win situation. On one hand they want to ensure their users have adequately fast broadband, but ADSL is a contended service so speed is dependant on how busy their customers are. The only way to better guarantee speeds is to limit the activity of the busiest users - i.e. impose download limits - but this then becomes a stain on the company, even if the majority of users won't even be affected by it.

The download limits on the first page are very high - claiming only 0.3% of users will notice is probably a fair statement. The only danger is if Plusnet decide to reduce this limit in the future - it's hard to introduce a cap to an uncapped service, but relatively easy to lower this limit...

The realy daft thing is that Capping does not improve the service. It just persuades their customers that they are better of going else where.

The SOLE and ONLY reason ISP's impose Caps is to reduce their COSTS. Thats the only reason.

The ONLY way you improve the service is by Limiting usage at peak periods. No ISP that I know of though does that.

Not really sure that any ISP can justify having 240 customers saturating bandwidth costing over 30,000 pounds per month - unless the "bad boys" want to cough up the cash themselves. I'm sure most Plusnet customers were shocked at their greed and frankly, judging by their ADSLGuide posts, glad to be rid of them. Plusnet still have a pretty reasonable traffic "allowance" in my opinion.

Andrews and Arnold used to have traffic limits during peak periods and even now they have a similar system in operation -

...This service is one of our usage based tariffs which includes unlimited upload, unlimited weekend download, unlimited night time download and 3GB/month of prepaid daytime/weekday usage. ...

http://www.aaisp.net.uk/aa/adsl/h3.html

... We do not charge or meter your overnight and weekend usage, or what you upload. To work out what is overnight we look at any records we get relating to your line received after 10pm and before 8am. This means you can be sure you are in night time by 10pm and may be back in to daytime by 6am. You could be in night time as early as 8pm and as late as 8am, and on average will have 10 hours each night and all weekend of unmetered usage (i.e. 58% of the time). ...

:hrmph:

Luke,
Thank you for posting the information concerning BT & the pipe sizes.
Please accept my apologies for giving incorrect information regarding the percentage of customers who may sometimes notice a reduced speed.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that Freedom2Surf have a cap in force which allows users totally free consumption between the hours of either midnight or 1am and 6am.

Paul45 no problem :)

We are actually looking at different possibilities including off peak (probably 1am to 7am) options. Right now it is only suggestions, but this is certainly something we are considering.

kind regards

Luke

Bulldog,

Thanks for the greetings, hope you had a great Christmas and I'ld like to wish you and all other readers a very Happy New Year.

Jasm,

What do you do with the Pictures? Do you upload them to a website or email them out? If so then this will use bandwidth. If you just move them from your camera to your PC, this will not use up bandwidth. If you could be a bit more specific about what you intend to do with the photos, we can give you a more accurate response.

Kind regards

Luke

the pictures are uploaded to Pbase @500Kb maybe 10/month and to view images more often.this will be the most file traffic.I suppose it will be a wait and see after the first month.Although elderly i have waited years for broadband to be available and i spent a lot of time studying options and based only on my uneducated logic i chose plusnet and signed up.

Its the same legal catch which they do to dialup.
EXAMPLE
Some Anytime services are advertised as connect anytime day or night. THere is a two hour disconnection but you can reconnect straighaway. In small print they then say a max of e.g 180 hours per month. Which is a lot. And they are pretty sure all of that wont be used up. But if it is, then they have found a serious downloader which they then kick off the network and they are happy again.

Its all a matter of surveillence. If a company offers unlimited, then they can group heavy downloaders and kick them out of that service to help other users. So the 28GB a month they do give you they could probably argue that its more than enough for a month, therefore unlimited. Like the 180 hours a month done by some ISPs for dialup.

Just a question. If I network two computers to share the internet connection, and on one, the users mostly download music(not excessively) and surf websites and on the other its mostly used for gaming/surfing websites/minor downloading. If we say that both computers connect at the same time each day for weekdays for 3-5 hours. And maybe 6-7 hours on weekends, how much GB would be used?
Many companies offer 5 GB. Which to me seems a lot. In my house we do all of the above, but obviously on a more less productive and slower scale. Would 5 GB be enough?

Also how is the data amount recorded?

Will i be able to download a 5 gig file in one month if thats all i wanted to do with no extra charge?

Is it upstream and downstream included in the 5 gig or just downstream?

What is the actual amount of data i could download in one month with the cap?

The statistics are generated from our Radius server logs and are found to be very accurate.

Our fair usage triggers will be set alot higher than 5GB, so this should not be a problem. No further costs would be associated with doing this (unless you were on a 'Lite' product that provides less than 5GB included data transfer allowance).

Is it upstream and downstream included in the 5 gig or just downstream?
Downstream only, excluding anything downloaded between 1am and 8am.

What is the actual amount of data i could download in one month with the cap?
This is subject to the findings from our consultation period and will be dependent on the speed of your service.
