Plusnet Portal

Due to a Power Outage in Sheffield, the Portals will be temporarily down.

We will put out a service status announcement out about this as soon as is possible.

This may also affect mail services.

Plusnet Customer Support

Dear All,

At 13:10 today we experienced a brief power outage in our Sheffield based Headquarters, one of four locations that contain core elements of our network. The same outage hit a number of businesses who share the same business park as us.

Although the power outage lasted for only a few seconds, resulting issues have affected elements of our network for over two hours now, with access to our own portal website and customer email collection being severely impacted.

Our customer support and Network operations centres, which are located in a different building were unaffected by the outage, although the amount of customer details available to our support team has been limited during this time. Because of the resilient design of our network, customer's Internet connections and other services have not been impacted by this outage and continue to work normally.

Our network engineers have had to perform a managed re-start of the affected network, which in total could take over 4 hours to complete. Service however is being restored quickly as this continues and we envisage customer impacting problems will be resolved much sooner than that.

As soon as this issue is fully resolved, we will be conducting a full investigation centered around why our uninterruptible Power Supply system did not maintain power to the entirety of our network following the power outage. We will also provide some more details about why our imminent building move means our mail and portal platforms do not currently have the full resiliency within their design, which under normal circumstances would result in no customer affecting impact as a result of a problem like we have experienced today.

Well its 4.22 and I still have no email facilities, this is not good.

As previously advised we are currently in the process of bringing the servers back online, we expect this to be up and running shortly.

There may be issues when the servers come back online, slight delays in receiving mail initially and slower responses from the portal but this should return to normal quickly.

never use a company for email etc that doesnt have all its servers in somewhere like telehouse or redbus - as is demonstrated today, a power glitch breaks it - alteast at telehouse etc they have properly managed power so outages dont occur.

Your not a serial Plusnet basher are you?;) I've been with +net for over 2 years and this is only the second time in 30 months that I have encountered a small glitch, which isnt bad considering some of the horror stories I've read with regard to other Isp's.:)

I was with plusnet for 14 months as the first 8 months was great service then it went downhills with stupid throttled, FUP, SUP and T & C kept changed all the times, got fed up with their service went from good to worse. I just glad that I left them. Most of them saying plusnet are good value for money (yes it was, but it suit for surf and light users as plusnet never be a truely broadband - I reckon adslmax will be throttled at 2mb instead of 8mb)

Here's my Plusnet experience in a nutshell.

I pay £21.99 ( premier account up to 2MB) per month and am allowed to download 100GB of data during that time. Plusnet also allow 15GB of that allowance during peak hours which I find is more than ample. :)

I have 3 pc's and three boys who torture my connection, still I dont exceed the limits, and have had no complaints from Plusnet, which for the price paid, is real value for money.

I have been with them roughly 30 months, and apart from the email problem today, have only had cause to contact them once with respect to a fault, which ended up being outwith Plusnets control as the phone line was corroded and needed replacing.

Now I know that everyone who uses Plusnet may not have such a good experience as I have had but all in all, they are a good Isp.

Oh well thats my bit said,

Cheers

Keith

Thanks Keith

It's good to hear from customers who are happy with the service.

Please be assured that yesterday's incident is being fully investigated and will be examined from every angle to see why it happened and how we can prevent reoccurence in the future.

More information on our investigations will be posted in the next couple of days.

Good for you, I have been with pnet for a year :

regular changes to shaping ovr the year... poor communication about it.
Been told contradicting messages from cs staff. Option 1 (your one) now has a peak time limit of 10gb before you get hugely throttled..

I cannot recommend plusnet anymore , it is now minusnet

I guess some peeps will never be happy no matter where they go. And just for the record, I am now on option 2 ( or will be tomorrow) and have a regraded line!! Plusnet are magic:drool:

Bulldog havn't you had more ADSL suppliers than I've had hangovers?

In my opinion Plusnet were great, 24 hour customer support, not many ISP's offer that. The speeds were great even on the 2mb 14.99 package, the only reason i moved was because i wanted a static IP, somthing they didnt offer on my package at the time. It's very sad that people insist on bashing Plusnet when deep down there no better or worse than any other ISP. These are the same people who insist on downloading the Internet each and every month. FOR GOD'S SAKE GROW UP !

I imagine I will be happy where I can pay around £22-25 per month and not be throttled after 10gb.

And for the smart alec's out there - no, I don't actually dload that much (as in, usually less than 12gb a month) and with the new services coming out to the net soon and with podcasts from bbc and more streaming on demand I think that 10gb is unrealistic for an increasing amount of people.

hehe, makes me laugh when you see people put caps on and telling others to 'grow up'

Im off to Nildram where I am sure I will be very happy. (nildram are in the top 10 ranking I believe - like plusnet USED to be! (caps!!)) oh, and with Nildram for 4pounds more you get 50gb before any trafffic throttling...not 10gb as with Minusnet.
Also, with Nildram you don't have to queue on the phone - just call them and let the automated queing system do it for you!!

This post is to let others know what is available so try to be constructive with your replies...

OK? (lol)

Oh, you won't know this because you are no longer with them I imagine but:

1) since I joined the usage limits have changed hugely.
2) contradictory messages from support staff.
3) 45minute+ wait times on the phone.
4) contact me tickets ignored.

If you don't believe me then I invite you to log in to the forums (you may still have a payg dial up account to access them? ) and dive through the current threads.

Oh, and today they announced (not via email as the email is still down) that they are bringing in a premium (50ppm) rate consultancy support line!!
I think we can see where this is going.

Still, at least you commented on a topic you obviously knew well, how long ago was it that you left again????

ah, so you now get a total of 22.5gb peak time and a total of 45gb a month. (cut a bit from 100gb hasn't it!)

this will be your throttling:
Peak-time usage within a billing month Speed of P2P, Usenet, file transfer applications Speed of other Internet activites
Up to 15GB Up to line speed* Up to line speed*
15GB Up to 256Kbps Up to 2Mbps
18.75GB Up to 128Kbps Up to 1Mbps
22.5GB Blocked Up to 512Kbps

and this for the princely sum of £29.99 a month.
I know you say you don't use the internet for huge downloads - if so, why go to option 2? But, anyway, don't you think that the throttling is severe (assuming you get 6 or 8 mb maxdsl!!)?

And no, I dont download the internet either!!
