point-to-point wireless solutions

hi.

Just looking for some advice here. I am about to embark on the community funded broadband route - I am not in a BDUK rollout area and BT have no plans to extend next gen broadband to our property. The reason for this is that our property is 2.7km from the fibre enabled cabinet ie. too far.

I have had an email from BT saying that if we went down the community funded route, then the price of install of a cabinet closer to us would be around £50,000 based on previous experience. There are only 5 houses here so that`s going to be a hefty bill, even if we all agree to chip in.

The frustrating thing is that we live on the hill side of a valley at 200metres height. I can clearly see out my window, a housing estate on the other side of the valley that has FTTC with speeds of around 30 mbps. There is even a 4g enabled mobile phone mast in direct line of site from my house. I can also see a castle 500 metres away that has FTTP installed!

So I am wondering if there is anyway of using what I can see outside my window to get next generation speeds at a cheaper cost than installing a new cabinet. I think I have already discounted the 4g mobile phone mast, as the data caps make it an unviable solution. However, I am aware of such things as microwave point-to-point connections which can span quite considerable distances eg enought to reach the housing estate, and definitely enough to reach the castle. However, I`m struggling to find out how to explore these options further.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Tim

These are a common choice: https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanostationm/ One on housing estate with FTTC and one at your premises. They can provide about 80mbps over the air without too much difficulty. If you can negotiate with one of the residents on the estate, you could get a faster system setup relatively quickly and cheaply.

The big caveat is that residential providers do not permit reselling eg housing estate person will not necessarily be allowed to permit your use of their connection as their provider. They could get another line installed, which you pay for, that just feeds your microwave link.

It's going to be very difficult to attract a commercial operator to tackle five houses, although the good news is that you live quite close to some good capacity supplies and that means a fixed wireless solution might well be viable.

I'd suggest contacting some of the providers in our Fixed Wireless ISP list to query whether they'd be able to quote. I'll single out providers like AB Internet, Kijoma, AirBand, Call Flow, County Broadband and ilovebroadband (LNComms) as being some of those that might be worth asking as they have experience of similar cases.

But just remember that while it might be quite a bit cheaper than £50k, the end price could still be fairly steep for such a small community.

Thanks. I think I`ll take a look at AB internet as it seems they have previously done stuff in Perth and Kinross (I`m wondering whether this was the project I heard about around Loch Tay).

I`m assuming the way things work with point to multi point links, is that they tap into the fibre network somewhere, then beam that to users. I think if they are able to get users to forward on that beam to other users ie. act as a relay, then that would open up the opportunity to more than just our 5 houses.

I`ve been given a contact for community broadband scotland - but I noticed that they will only support community initiatives where the sites are getting less than 2mbps, and not likely to get this as part of the `Step Change programme`. This is a bit frustrating, because it means that communities will get support to move from <2mbps to speeds probably in the double digits through wireless tech etc. Howeevr, if like us you have an average speed of 3.5mbps, you get no support to get next gen speeds

Hi there, I live in Dundee and have working knowledge of PTP wireless technologies. I'm not sure if you would stand much chance of getting a commercial company like AB Internet on board due to commercial feasibility. However I'd be happy to advise/look to setup a project to deliver a wireless broadband solution. Can you let me know where you are (private message me if you can?) and perhaps we can see about making something happen.

Hi kpx could you please have this account verified if you work for a company that supplies this type of internet please email mark.j

Can I remind members to only send information to verified ISP reps

Hi Kits

I'm not currently a representative of a company that provides internet services but I have been exploring the possibility of launching a company. Wireless PTP is currently more of a hobby for me as I have set up a couple of links before which is why I offered to help out if I could.
