Poor ADSL Speeds?

My ADSL speeds with Central Point have been extremely variable, and at their request did several speed tests during a typical evening and a couple in the early hours when things should have been a bit quieter.

My speed test reults were as follows:

19/10/2004 – 5.30pm
Downstream 483 Kbps (60.4 KB/sec) 521 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

19/10/2004 – 6.45pm
Downstream 437 Kbps (54.6 KB/sec) 471 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

19/10/2004 – 8.00pm
Downstream 440 Kbps (55.0 KB/sec) 475 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

19/10/2004 – 9.00pm
Downstream 292 Kbps (36.5 KB/sec) 315 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 240 Kbps (30.0 KB/sec) 259 Kbps (inc. overheads)

19/10/2004 – 9.30pm
Downstream 296 Kbps (37.0 KB/sec) 319 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 241 Kbps (30.1 KB/sec) 260 Kbps (inc. overheads)

19/10/2004 – 10.00pm
Downstream 405 Kbps (50.6 KB/sec) 437 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 192 Kbps (24.0 KB/sec) 207 Kbps (inc. overheads)

19/10/2004 – 10.30pm
Downstream 377 Kbps (47.1 KB/sec) 407 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

20/10/2004 3.40am
Downstream 252 Kbps (31.5 KB/sec) 272 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 205 Kbps (25.6 KB/sec) 221 Kbps (inc. overheads)

20/10/2004 6.15am
Downstream 281 Kbps (35.1 KB/sec) 303 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Central Point have come back to me claiming that these speeds are normal for a 512K connection. I'm not convinced - so I thought I'd ask you nice folks what you think of these speeds. Am I expecting too much?

Many thanks in advance.

Your upload speeds look ok. Some of the Download ones are ok the 450 + ones.

A lot depend on what you are measuring as well

Just done another test over at adslguide.org

20/10/04 7:00pm
Downstream 291 Kbps (36.4 KB/sec) 314 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

This is awful. Is this because this is a datastream product? Would I get better speeds on an IP stream connection at the same exchange?

I'd ask Central Point to have tests run on your line. Really if the speed goes below 50K (Download)then there is a problem that should be investigated.

Anything less that 50K is not normal and they cannot say it is.

19/10/2004 – 6.45pm
Downstream 437 Kbps (54.6 KB/sec) 471 Kbps (inc. overheads)
is acceptable
19/10/2004 – 9.00pm
Downstream 292 Kbps (36.5 KB/sec) 315 Kbps (inc. overheads)
isn't!

I wouldn't be happy with it.

Thanks EntityOnline. I've already submitted two support tickets to Cental Point drawing their attention to the speed tests I've done at adslguide, and both times they say that the speeds are normal and promptly close the support ticket. :(

I'm currently downloading XP SP2 from microsoft at an amazing 36.9KB/s. :(

CP just don't seem to care. The only saving grace is that I'm only tied in for 3 months. I'd be pulling my hair out if was a 12 month contract.

Same slow speeds here as well

Hi ,

This is my firs post here, even though I am following this forum for long time.
I also signed up with CPB on 15/10 and I have poor speeds on 1mb. I loged ticket but not much success with CP support. They simply told me it is contention and nothing can be done about my speeds. But, thing that is even more annoying is that they never said they use Tiscali to provide their broadband and they never told me that I am being placed on Tiscali platform and even though I complain about it every day , their answer is that it is up to Them to choose provider to supply broadband. That I could accept if CP adised me about it before I signed with them and not after I complain about my speeds. As others said before, only good thing is that it is 3 months contract and if CP don't improve and don't deliver what they promised , I will be off to decent ISP. I still hope this can be sorted but now is nearly 7 days, and contention cannot be 24 hr a day. And funny thing is, all I know contention issue should be worst around now (7-11 pm) , but as you can see from my speed test it is not that bas as it is other time of the day, so it seems to me that simply there is some sort of capping on, which for me is not surprising if I am placed on so called Tiscali platform, even without my knowledge prior it.

Downstream 770 Kbps (96.3 KB/sec) 831 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 240 Kbps (30.0 KB/sec) 259 Kbps (inc. overheads)

P.S This is supposed to be 1mb , but I could live with this speed if it was always close to it, but most of time it is between 30-60 kbs and when I try to download files it never goes over 50kbs which surely cannot be contention issue always.

Regards to all.

The 63db could be causing you problems if you aren't using damn good filters.

Just a thought

There is no requirement on an ISP to tell anyone which provider they are using. It sounds as if they are just a VISP reselling the Tiscali service

When you say it falls to 30-60Kbs this may be normal. It depend on from where and what you are downloading. Using one of the various speed tests around will give an indication of what the speed is.

We've got a BT fitted adsl faceplate, the one with the built in filter. Our line was tested by a BT engineer and passed fit for broadband when we had the ISDN removed last month. From the research I've done this evening it would seem most likely that our problem lies with the VP at the exchange - which is fairly common problem with datastream services. :crap:

Ah.

If you have faceplate then line will be fine. It kinda explains things.
VP could well be a problem then. Guess your kinda stuck waiting on Cp's tech support then.

I've just fired off an e-mail to Telefonica this morning to see if they can make anything happen since it is now perfectly clear that Central Point consider the matter to be closed. :(

A better solution, and the one I would follow, is to tell them "Goodbye" and give Plusnet a shout, I'm certain you would be well impressed with their service, in short ( and am sure other plusnetters would agree), they are the best.

I've already told them I'm going to cancel once the 3 month contract is up. Thanks for the recommendation by the way, I'll have a look at them.
