Poor download speed on BBMax - why??

Guys,

My ISP is NDO and I recently upgraded my crappy 512K service to th Broadband Max service - for the first couple of weeks all seemed fine and I was getting a good download speed of 120kb/sec (god that's crap I hear you cry but it was heaven to me - I live quite a way from my exchange so any speed increase was a bonus)

But for some reason the last week I've been getting top download speeds of 64kb/sec - that's the same speed I was getting on my 512k connection! :mad:

My current router config page show's:-

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1056 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 9 db 8 db

Surely if my router is synching at 1056kbps then I should be getting just over 100kb\sec download speeds! am I right?

I've contacted NDO Tech support and they want me to do run a number of speed checks 3 times a day for the next 3 days - quite frankly I just don't have the time to do this - and why should I do it. I'm paying top money for a crappy service at the moment.

Can anyone please throw any light on my situation? any help would be much appreciated.

Could be down to BT's BRAS rate settings, apparently you need to consistently sync at 1152Kbps or higher to get better than your old 512k speeds.

I can understand the ISP wanting some speed tests, I think BT require evidence before they'll send out an engineer, and they would almost certainly charge the ISP if the engineer decides there is nothing wrong with the line. However I'm surprised that ISPs don't supply diagnostic software (eg a script or a self booting linux distro on CD) to automate whatever tests they desire.

There is a problem still with BT's software and the ISP's need to prove this to BT, your line would of synced up at 512 for maybe 30 seconds at one point which has dropped the speeds down to match the sync that happened for 30 seconds say before it went back to just over the 1 meg.

That is why the speeds have dropped like they have, now this is why NDO want you to do the tests:

The sync speed is sent to a system that the changes the throughput rate for your line which is/was set to keep it at that speed for 3 days if the line is stable at the higher sync speed till it goes back up, so you do the tests while the BT system sorts itself out and normally your throughput speed catches up they dont need to bother BT etc etc.

NDO can test if everything looks ok and if you have had your line sync at a slower speed so they should be able to tell you when to expect the system to change your speeds again.

Just a few ideas as i've had a similar problem (syncing at 5mb but downloading around 1mb). Drag yourself out of bed around 1 or 2am and start a download from www.mirror.ac.uk (make sure its a decent size) and see what you get. While that is downloading start another couple of downloads to see what your total throughput is. If in total your only getting 64ish K/s then you know its your profile. If the total is nearer 100K/bs then you know its your ISP's QoS or another form of traffic shapeing. I had a BT guy round a few weeks ago and he was saying your actual useable rate is about 500k less than the sync speed, so if your syncing around 1000 then usable is going to be around 512 still, don't know how true that is. To go back to my first point if i do a download with eclipse around lunchtime as a single file i'll get 100-150 max but start to or 3 more files and there all around there thus proving the capacity is there.
