Porting In to o2 slow from Tesco

Arranged a port for one of my family from Tesco to O2.

Followed process and port was due today (Friday 8th March 2024) Tesco SIM has now been cut off but I’m concerned as when I dial the “old” number it says it’s completely unreachable.

The temporary number o2 has given me all works, for texts, calls and data but old number is dead.

Tesco has confirmed they’ve released the number and closed the account but o2 said it could take until Monday?!?

I’ve ported loads in the past, and occasionally there’s some glitches but usually happens in a couple of hours, but I’m really worried they’ve lost the number or screwed this up.

Any advice as it’s Friday, they’ve advised to hold onto till early evening but by that point nothing can be done.

I would wait it out over the weekend tbh. It's really irritating but sometimes this stuff happens with porting.

When a port takes place, the routing instructions are only fully updated overnight. Odd behaviour can and often does happen until that point.

If there is some kind of delay or issue then it often automatically fixes itself overnight on the following working day.

If you do end up with any more serious issue, the people who handle porting at both O2 and Tesco are the same team. So you just need to get back to them if it's not all sorted by Tuesday. It might further delay things, but it will almost certainly get sorted.

In future, it's advisable to not arrange a port for Friday as if things do go wrong you're stuck waiting an extra 2 days to normal. But I definitely wouldn't start freaking out worrying that the number is lost forever in a black hole. It's VERY rare for things to go so badly wrong that this happens.

O2 has some porting issues at present, there's a big thread over on Giffgaff about the delays all week.

Thanks everyone, appreciate that, phone got a weird text message, saying “thanks for preferences they have been saved” -

Decided to reset the phone and everything kicked in except FaceTime and iMessage which I’m doing battle with now.

I just read too many horror stories on O2 community forum when I should have come here first. Cheers for all the detail Koda.

Yeah you'll probably be fine, how did you find the hold times? I transferred my O2 eSIM to a new eSIM because the iOS transfer option wasn't available when I was swapping over to the phone in store, I was in the store for over an hour while they tried to get their systems to work, eventually "did" it and said it takes a bit to activate. When I did this before it did take around an hour before the new SIM had service, so that was okay. It didn't work, and I was bounced between the store and customer service by incompetent staff until after hours of hold one person managed to fix it in 5 minutes

I dialled 202 from the phone with the O2 sim and was on hold for about 20 mins, add an extra 5 mins for dealing with the awful security system that doesn't even recognise you.

The port completed around 5pm after messing around with the FaceTime/iMessage settings and a text to my own number confirmed it.

That's the longest and weirdest porting I've ever experienced but I know for the future as another family member wants to move now.
