Possible Three - Telenor merger

CK Hutchison (owner of Three) and Telenor have been in talks to merge their businesses.

Telenor Denmark is the second-biggest mobile and fixed broadband operator in the country while Telenor Sweden is the third largest in the nation, according to the company (Three) as they strive towards a asset-light strategy.

Please note that Three has also been in talks with other Nordic partners.

Naturally no comment was forthcoming from the parties involved.

(I've attached the contents of the short FT article as txt, if you get paywalled).

I guess it could be Three's Plan B should the Vodafone merger get a thumbs down from Ofcom (which I hope it will, as it will leave us with less competition).

Worth noting Three's negative cash flow mentioned in the FT article, explained in part by its explosion of new mast deployments and low prices (fattening up for acquisitions/mergers).

Three-Telenor wouldn't be a problem for the UK regulator, as it wouldn't affect competition here. It might be a problem for regulators in Sweden and Denmark, however!

That telegraph article about "Please let us merge to survive we can't keep spending without a merger 😢😢😢 woe is me" was pretty interesting.

I'm pretty sure now the build push for all of those "poles of wonder" was just to build up assets to make a merger attractive to Vodafone.

Personally I'd be "for" such a Three/Telenor merger.

Why are you oppose to Three merging in the UK with Vodafone yet are quite happy for Three to merge with Telenor? Is it because the latter is outside the UK and doesn't really affect UK customers?

Exactly, we'd still have 4 operators, with Three+Telenor arguably more solid than Three before/alone.
