Post Office ADSL Max problems

Hi
5 weeks ago I moved house and had a new line put in with the Post Office (and post office bb). My previous house was on the other side of town, but connected to the same exchange and ISP and I had no problems at all.

Since having this new line put in most of the time my speed will not exceed 0.6mpbs (according to the BT speedchecker) unless its between 4am-8am when it can see anything up to 2.5mb. I am synced at 8mb consitantly.

About 3 weeks ago I contacted PO and they sent a BT engineer out who said that there was nothing wrong with the line and that it was congestion with the ISP.

Now, I have done the BT speedchecker many times and often the speed is so low (400k) that it askes me to do a 3rd test and change my router login to the bt startupdomain one.

These tests also come back very slow.

It was my understanding that if these were slow to then the problem was with BTopenreach and the exchange rather than my ISP?

PO are sending another openreach engineer tomorrow - I'm expecting the same results as the first one.

Can anyone offer any advice as to what I should do?

Thanks

one point of interest, tho its likely to of been covered.. do you have anything like cordless phones next to your router? maybe even a TV.. l guess anything that gives off some form of interference can cause issues, l gained a meg after moving my cordless phone.

also too many extensions can cause issues as well, if all else fails then lm unsure what to say, except post your router stats, lm sure once someone else who knows more joins this thread will be able to tell you allot more about possible issues by looking at them.

Hi
My router is next to a cordless phone, however I was next to the same phone in the old place.

I have no extensions. This is a brand new line/master socket. My SNR is pretty stable at 11/12 down and 24up. My router doesnt drop sync.

l would suggest moving the cordless phone or the router as far away as possible, like l said when l had the issue and moved mine away l gained a meg in speed instantly and its still crawling up towards 3meg

The fact your speed increases during the early hours of each morning does suggest that this is a contention / congestion problem more than one with the line itself. I don't know your downstream attenuation but the Noise Margin you report is also strong, which is further evidence of a good line.

You can check whether your telephone exchange VP is contended by putting your phone number into PlusNet's tester:

I would also add that the PostOffice has signed up to Ofcom's Code of Practice on broadband speeds.

See our 2008 news item for more details.

This tool will show as red even if just 1 VP is running hot and most exchanges have several so it isnt 100% accurate.

The ISP have the ability to find out if the VP that a customer is on is running hot and find out about any upgrades planned.
