Would I be right in thinking that if:
I run a mail server on my LAN that retrieves all my mail from my ISP, and I configure it to encapsulate all attatchments in a non-executable form (e.g., passwordedzip) before passing them to a connecting client;
then my clients will be a helluva more resistant to malicious mail?
E.g.,
My ISP has some nasty mail with a JPG, an EXE , and a PIF attachment.
The mail server on my LAN downloads the mail & rejigs it.
A client on my lan asks my mail server for the mail. It receives the mail with the JPG,EXE,PIF as a single non-runnable (e.g. ZIP) attachment.
AFAIK this will defeat any auto-run-on-open of the mail? My user will have to actually go open the {ZIP} & double-click something.
Is anyone aware of such a product (hopefully a cheap one
, or better still can anyone reccomend one? I've googled around but either there's nowt out there or I'm not sure I'm using the right keywords. (I am aware of various mailservers that provide signature-based integrated virus protection, but that's not really what I'm after).
