printer sharin (wireless)

Hey up,

I got a Belkin F5D7632-4 modem/wireless router. I plug in via ethernet..another pc via wireless. Does anyone know, is it possible to hook the printer up so it works with either pc..even if mine is turned off?
Have seen the wireless printer devices..wondered if it can be done using what i have now.

The printer's currently connected to my pc..sharing is enabled and a network set up between us -via the router..i have no direct cable link or wireless card- yet the printer will only work if my pootas turned on..even then its sketchy!!

Any ideas?

The PC the printer is connected to has to be on for the printer to work. There are some routers on the market that have printer connection where its the router only the printer is connected to.

Another way would be to build a small spec pc that can be left on all the time with the printer connected to this instead of yours,

I would like to know how to share my printer too.

Printer---> USB to PC ---> ethernet to router ------> wireless to laptop

Can this be done?

Wouldn't that topology work with standard Windows printer sharing Unicast ? Or do you want a print server independent of a PC ?

I'll give it another go, but last time I tried to share the printer my laptop couldn't "see" it when I went through the "install printer" wizard. This is using XP Pro by the way. And no I don't want an independant print server - would just like to be able to print from the laptop.

Kits, hi and thanks. Its not a problem enough times to sort a seperate poota just for that, mines the main one-for business purposes- and im the one the printers wired too.

Unicast..sound like the same setup to me. I have had it workin..just had a few probs since buildin a new poots a week ago..need sortin again..groan. I did it all on the poots.set up the network wizard..also the wireless network one..obviously make sure they tie together..enable printer sharin, find the printer on the wireless pc, auto install the drivers and it worked. Until last night that is!!

Let me know if ya get it workin..it can be done. Im XP Home..if that matters.

I've just had this working on the laptop. I can now print using Ubuntu linux from the laptop! I'm sure I tried and failed when I had XP on the lappie, oh well.

I have XP on both and it's now workin again.

Still, as long as you got it goin's all that matters! :D

What you really want is an ethernet print server that is independent of any computer attachment.

e.g. http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=107885

The D- Link DP-301U is a compact print server that connects to your Ethernet or Fast Ethernet network. With its high-speed USB port, the DP-301U allows those on your network to access and share a USB printer no matter where they reside on the network.

That one is just an example. HP are known to do good ones for their own printers. It's a case of searching for the cheapest one you can find that will do what you want.

Hope that points you in the right direction.

True...

That's the problem with computers though innit... All the good fixes (the hardware ones) cost money. Way of the world. It sucks but that's life.
