Hello, I've been having some trouble with AOL recently. My broadband connection keeps shutting down, leaving me connected to the router (Netgear one recommended by AOL) in "Local Only" mode. This has not been too much of a problem, however, more recently, I have been unable to connect to some internet sites (including streaming youtube videos or updating Java) and I have been unable to use Windows Live Messenger.

If anyone knows the problem, I would like to know. I would also like to know if I should contact AOL (on a paid line) to sort this out, or whether it will go away.

Thanks in advance,

JimboG

Lots of problems reported by AOL users lately. They are switching users to the Talk Talk network, which seems to be causing no end of trouble.

Changing the router's MTU setting might help, 1400 i think is the new setting, (though someone will need to confirm).

Be careful if you phone AOL, they would like nothing better than to get you off that Gold package and into a nice new 40GB, 18 month contract.

Adding to that, if you can actually get a connection but some websites don't load properly (DNS problems) then try the OpenDNS service instead, that will bypass your ISP's DNS servers and gives you more control.

It may also be worth trying a different PPP method (PPPoE or PPPoA) to login, just as a test, although in this case it's unlikely to solve your problems.

i left AOL in 2005 summer and they had already gone down the pan, people were deserting them in there thousands that is why they sold it.

its a joke, i had the same problem it wasnt allowing me to sign into any messenger services and it got to the point where no page would load, the connection was dropping every 2 minutes if that - got on the phone to aol and they wouldnt let me cancel before going through troubleshooting - was on the fone to them for about 4 hours or so before they would let me cancel even then i still had to ring bak to make sure iw ouldnt have to pay rememainig of the service since they cant provide me with the service. was with them for 7-8 years not had any isuses. its the merging of the broadbands with talk talk - cpw have brought them out and now orange o2 aol and talk talk are all together apprantly.

get out of the contract i say cos your gonna have none stop problems

I have AOL silver. No problems with it that can't be settled on the online or freephone line. I wonder why the OP said a paid line? Or have things changed?

Is that a troll?

Talk Talk might be throttling AOL users but that would be criminal I think, a civil trespass certainly. The latter requires a writ for tort or something. (Picked that up on Groklaw but I am not a real lawyer.)

If I was on AOL Gold I would be smacking silly over it. I wonder what the online convos have been like? I always save mine to text file. (After substituting the names involved the file can be posted if there is a stupidity involved.)

I think the OP should be more forthcoming. I would never use a phone if it was a pay for line. Letters are so much more relaxing to write and harder to deny.

AOL lost a lot of Kudos when Microsoft bleached their browser. I wonder if they will get sued over it one day. I can't see the problem being a browser issue these days with Firefox and Opera such good tools. And a general move on the part of site owners to clean up their IE crappy sites.

I have been with AOL Silver for over 10 years and with the exception of their crap help telephone service they have been good. My computer often runs slow and friends have told me that it's because the AOL software messes up my registry.
I will be purchasing a new computer soon and I am now thinking that perhaps I don't want to load the AOL software to it. Has anyone else had similar problems?

AOL isn't the problem. You need a spring clean. SmitFraudFix, CWShredder, AdAware, SpyBot, AVG rootkit cleaner, A decent Firewall that you can set to prevent IE from escaping, AOL provide a firewall but it is crap. It has its setting adjusted by AOL to their default.

And you want a decent AV I am not sure how good they all are but AVG works for me. Some Firewalls/AVs change your registry.

Stop registry changes with WinPatrol, SpywareGuard and SpyBot's Teatimer. You will be able to see any changes that are made when you have any of them. They will ask you if you want them.

SpywareBlaster is another good tool. But you probably know all this. When you use them in Safe mode they will find almost everything. If you find you have a lot of malware, run the set and reboot then get updates and start again.

If you are still running slow get HijackThis and post a report to a suitable forum set up to check them. There may be toolbars and stuff that need removing.

Run the programmes in the order listed. Some scanners have the annoying habit of claiming SmitFraudFix is a bug. You may have to keep downloading it every time you want to run it. Pity that.

That's what I use, my speeds are top notch. You can test your speeds on the tool available on this website. Click the Speedtest tab. Do it a few time and at different times of day.

I particularly like the anti-spyware scanner always running in the background. If AOL did affect the registry, it is very unlikely it would be a detriment to the service. How do your friends explain a registry change affects the modem?

Good luck.
