Problems with my CPE Pro 2

My CPE Pro 2 is unlocked from the factory.

I have a few problems I wondered whether anyone could offer advice on.

1. Logging onto the router itself

Sometimes it's instant, sometimes it just hangs. I try hirouter.net and the actual ip: 192.168.8.1 and it just sits there in Safari. At least Brave gives me a timeout:

192.168.8.1/html/index.html?origin=xxx"

Safari sometimes warns me the connection's not private:

This website may be impersonating "hirouter.net" to steal your personal or financial
information. You should go back to the previous page.

But it hangs even when I tell it to ignore and visit the page.

2. The router frequently loses signal.

I think this is to do with Three in my area which has actually stopped offering 5G mobile broadband and, now I check, mobile broadband altogether!

When my contract ran out, in order to get the new device, I had to have it delivered to a friend in an adjacent postcode because they weren't offering it at my address. However my old (CPE Pro first gen) device was working fine so I figured it was worth it.

I find it really odd that Three 5G is consistently fine on my phone though. Which means that either:

i) there are different 5G masts for different devices (that are being worked on .. the three website always says something about work going on in my postcode

ii) my phone automatically turns its modem off and then on when it gets disconnected (never seen this happen though)

iii) Three knows it's a router that's in an area that's not supported and either stops giving it priority or just periodically boots it off.
Here's some info from the system logs. I don't know how much of this is relevant though. No idea why it thinks it's 1970.

I don't know what that means.

3. When the router loses signal.

When this happens (both 4G & 5G lights wink out of existence). If I want it to reconnect I have to unplug and plug it back in.

If this is going to continually happen to me I'd like to find a solution for doing it remotely or - even better - automatically.

What I want is for the router to be able to either reboot itself or, you know, turn off and on whatever the equivalent of aeroplane mode is for a router (which, I concede, may just be switching itself off and on).

In a fundamentally misguided moment I installed a HomeKit plug to turn the router off and then on again; I figured I could use HomeKit despite the internet being down. All went well until I turned the router off and then realised that I had no wifi with which to turn the HomeKit plug on. Genius.

4. Where to get the firmware to update the router?

I don't know where to download firmware files from. It says it's up to date but I suspect not because I don't know whether Huawei are updating ones that don't come from the carriers.
Perhaps they are.

Clearly nobody can guarantee that any of these are safe but here you go:

With a bit of Googling (which is what I did), you should be able to find other options but all will be at your own risk, etc.

Having lived with the CPE Pro 2 for over 3 years now on EE, Three, and Vodafone, and mostly having had a very positive experience, here is what I would recommend:

- Try all networks available in your area. Their reliability will differ vastly, especially in London, and will also change to a surprisingly large degree over time. This is how I ended up migrating between EE, Three, and Vodafone, in the span of 18 months.

- Use HuaCTRL and LTE H-Monitor. There are many options you can tweak in these apps, especially radio settings. LTE H-Monitor can even be set up on a dedicated device to constantly monitor and adjust your band settings. It also allows you to set up custom SMS commands, which might be handy if you need to reset your network while you're not at home, for instance.

- Using the 2 utilities I mentioned above, try switching between all available bands on each network. You will find that this often makes a huge difference to your speeds and reliability, as it forces the device to connect to different masts, some of which may be less congested, and therefore more reliable, than others.

- Try to fine-tune the device positioning. For me, on Three for instance, merely turning the device by about 15 degrees makes a difference between connecting in the 40MHz vs the 100Mhz spectrum, with the speeds being about 2Mbps vs 250Mbps respectively, on the same mast. This might be unique to Three but probably worth a try.

Other more experienced users on here might be able to recommend far more useful things to try. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
