Proton VPN Query

Hi folks, thought I would give a VPN a try to see how it affected my speeds, never really bothered with them before so it's all new to me really.

I thought I would try out Proton VPN as it stated they had a free tier that had unlimited data.

I managed to get an account set up and the app installed on a firestick max and chromecast wth Google TV.

To my surprise, my speeds have increased from my usual 30 to just under 60 which is a huge difference and I'm to be honest quite gobsmacked.

Does anyone know if it's possible to use this VPN on the CPE Pro 2 router at all?

Proton states that it supports OpenVPN routers and IKEv2 but not sure these are suitable for the CPE Pro 2, I suspect not.

I'm delighted with my results on the firestick and chromecast, but the main reason I wanted Proton on the router was to see if it I could improve my Xbox game updates a little.

I have yet to look for any VPN's on the Xbox store.

Any advice for any free VPN's suitable wth the CPE Pro would be most welcome as I'm not familiar with their use at all up until I tried out Proton.

Although Proton gives me access to the US netflix etc this isn't my reason for wanting a VPN, nor is privacy, I'm just loving the little boost in my speeds.

Anyway thanks to anyone who's bothered to read my rather lengthy VPN noobie post, any advice most welcome.😊

You need l2tp tunnel for the CPE Pro 2 (and even then check it once in a while to make sure it's still connected).
See if Proton have l2tp, if not the Aaisp l2tp tunnels work for sure, I tried them myself (£10/m).

Thanks for that Lucian, as I say it's all new to me and will probably just stay with what I have have with Proton as it's free and I'm a total cheapskate.

Not really wanting to pay for a VPN as I'm just wanting the little free speed boost lol, what a difference it makes to 4K streaming on Netflix and YouTube and IPTV, no waiting around to reach 4K, it's just instant.

Glad I decided to try it though, will do nicely untill my three pole of wonder erection team decide to come out of hiding.(y)

Will investigate if Proton has tunnelling, don't think so though.

Have you tried Cloudflare's warp? It's free.

Yes I have thanks Lucian, it did work to improve things, but strangely Proton is faster.(y)

Saying that I just tried warp again and got 70 on my tablet lol.
Have dificulty getting it installed on the firestick though, maybe try the chromecast next.

Great fun experimenting with all these things, costs nothing but results are great. I like that.

Is it coincidence or has the mast been upgraded a little as time goes by 😅
Well the work at my local mast is still ongoing Carl01460, but it's said that so many times over the years and nothing ever changes speedwise.

I have tried it with and without using warp or Proton and without them I still get 30, so whatever they are doing, it's working really well.(y)

Have you tried another Speedtest app such as the O2 My Network app? I always find the Speedtest app itself gives very variable results and mostly differ to other apps.

Cheers Carl01460, just tried it and it seems to keep saying my speed is 7 which is way off, even when using Proton or Warp it still shows a max of 7.
I'm not very impressed with o2's speed checker.☺️

Interestingly the burst speed was decent at 395 using smarty connected to the 5G local mast.
