Public Wi-Fi Tests / Discussion

I actually found another type of hub without the silver base today in Glasgow. Perhaps it was just painted though. :giggle:

Should have checked for 4G!
I was too busy looking for SA, no time for that 4G antique malarkey. :giggle:
It wasn't half making a racket though, it sounded like a possessed hair dryer.

Yeah I find that they can sound a bit loud personally

(guess I'm looking on Cellmapper in Glasgow now for EE 4G sightings 😁)

Yeah, you did find one, 41238
@The Wee Bear judging by Street View imagery of the estimated site, it looks like it's that one anyways

I've placed it down, hopefully it's not too far off because Street View doesn't want to work well today and it doesn't show up there

Onboard WiFi on CrossCountry train running from Peterborough to Birmingham:

Ping: Appeared to be between 1 to 4 MS on my usual Speedtest app but it was incorrect as other apps said over 50 (I wonder if the traffic was being blocked).
Download:
Test 1: 0.42 MBPS
Test 2: 0.81 MBPS
There seemed to be a hard cap of 1 MBPS download.

Upload: Both upload tests failed, changing between 0.00 and 0.05 and both ending at 0.00. This was on all speedtest apps I tried.
ISP: Advertised as Nomad Digital on login page, ISP of the IP was Iomart Cloud Services

After hitting what looked like a low un-published 'high-speed data limit' I was throttled to at most 0.05 download, at that point I just used EE 4G for the rest of the journey which was at about 30 download.

A test from a stationary LNER train at Peterborough station:
Ping: 10 MS
Download: 2.43 MBPS
Upload: 1.05 MBPS
ISP: Advertised as Icomera on login page, the ISP of the IP was Custodian DC.
Due to the low Ping I wonder if this was somehow linking in to some station WiFi instead of 4G.
I'd be interested to see some more train WiFi tests here.

Interesting to see something other than The Cloud.

I'll tell you something, having a unified public wifi network that seems to have a 500mbit/1gbit backhaul no matter which location you are in is pretty impressive.

I've used this network in mcdonalds, petrol stations, hospitals, parks etc and I have never had a speedtest lower than 200mbit in both directions. All included in my £3/yr SIM card package lol.

I don't think the UK has anything remotely close to this kind of thing. Shame.

If you are using MacOS I highly recommend getting a hold of WiFi Explorer Pro 3. It is the Wifi equivalent of netmonster and tells you almost everything about the wifi network you are on.

For example I know the public wifi networks here in Thailand seem to use a combo of Cisco and Ruckus gear.

Suppose this is good for no signal from data?

74/18.5mbps

Although O2 3G was popping up from Lidl monopole (I don't understand why considering I'm in the lower level of Boots).

The Street Hub doesn't cover this perfectly, but is pretty decent.
