Question about Internet Connection Records

Dear members,

I have been looking into the investigatory powers act 2016 trying to understand it.

One thing I can't seem to find conclusive answer on is if the government would only have access to your ICRs of the last 12 months or if they can get access to an untold length of ICRs but are only allowed to keep them for 12 months.

Essentially how far back would the ICRs go?

Thank you for any replies, it is greatly appreciated.

This is my interpretation of how this works, so may not be 100% accurate.

ISP's can only hold a maximum of 12 months worth of records and any data relating to 12+ months ago should be deleted. This is to mitigate against the huge amounts of storage that would be required otherwise. If the government wants something from 12+ months ago they can't access it because it doesn't (shouldn't) exist.

The length of time that the government can keep the data requested is then determined by the warrant that the government received in order to request the information. Standard time lengths for warrants seems to be 6 months, but this can be extended provided sufficient evidence still exists to continue holding this data beyond 6 months.
