Why can't I have two broadband suppliers to choose from at home?
The ability to switch between the two.

Because broadband isn't like dial-up - it's not a case of just dialling a different number for a different ISP.

It is based on your physical telephone line and has to be switched on at the exchange, so the only way you can have 2 broadband ISPs is to have 2 different telephone lines, incurring 2 sets of line-rental costs (and 2 different telephone numbers, of course.

Apparantly ISPs in general don't offer it. Some employees of companies have one service login to their company and another for personal use. This may even apply to BT employees.

The option is "service selection" and the default is "service selection barring". One ISP would rent the line and give access rights via another.

actually, it is possible to have two ISPs on one line... "however" the limitation of tags on one line is set by BT in order to have more than one contract (two adsl connections on one line) you have to get permissions from both parties, and BT l think and have a good enough reason for needing it however as far as lm aware they rarely ever allow this.
