Quick review of Three's new outdoor 5G hub

That shouldnt be happening because you have the firmware people need/want.

Make sure your in admin mode.
Change the APN details by clicking on modify.
Save the details when you have edited them.
MAKE SURE to hit apply at the bottom on the main apn screen after thats done for the changes to take effect.
Thanks. Had done all of the above, still no luck. I'll be returning my device, the hardware certainly isn't good enough to make up for the software

On the hardware front, the device uses the Quectel RG600L modem, so it's on the T750 from a few years back. That is limited to a maximum of 2 NR carriers, and seemingly 1 4G + 2 5G carriers? Not ideal for 5G networks in 2024.

Antenna wise there are four, on the front and side of the device. Appears to be more akin to a 270° pattern than 360°

Well I could be wrong but you would struggle to get a CPE with more than 2 locks on a 5G band anyways and if you could it wouldn't be at that price range.

Your already using 16 streams connected to 2 x 5G bands, it would be 4+4+4+4 on FDD Bands. I suppose if you were connecting to TDD Bands you could aggregate more than 2 but I dont see how that would be effective for throughput at the moment anyways given how infantile our 5G network is. The downfall I find is that low bands tend to have pretty crap bandwidth as it is, I mean I can lock onto N7 @ 40Mhz and then get a second lock on N28 @ 15Mhz which compared to a 5 band lock on 4G is pretty slow simply because its only using 55Mhz. If im on 4G and get a 5 band lock ill get 100Mhz to play with. As i said I could be wrong and perhaps there is a CPE that will lock on to more than 2 bands but I dont see it being anywhere near this price range.

Sorry not quite following you on the bandwidths, no UK network has n7 40MHz or n28 15MHz?

My disappointment is that the router is using technology from 2021, it doesn't add anything over the Zyxel or other routers from a modem PoV as far as I can tell.

Given the PAYM price maybe that's not unreasonable, just as a product in itself it's not suited to EE NSA or SA, or VF NSA or SA.

I'll look to get my hands on EEs latest hub to compare it

Yes you are correct though, it is old tech based on the modem. It does the job though. Signal seems to be better than the two others ive used so its my primary cpe for the moment.

They have n7 15MHz or 30MHz, and n28 10MHz don't they?
You could well be right on that, the firmware is a bit glitchy so might not be showing the right channel widths. N7 is awesome though, Im so glad they have it on my local tower. N28 is pretty poor. It does lock on both though. And sits on Band 3 for its anchor.

Does anyone know if the new Three GreenPacket Y5-210MU. External 5G Hub can be set up to operate in modem mode directly via the RJ45 connector? I want to be able to use it as 'fail-over" for my normal fibre modem broadband access.

Yes, it’s called ip pass through

Freddy, thats great. Have you seen any documentation on that? Or does it just come up on the http menus?

Hi all, I recently discovered the world of 5G broadband and got the Three GreenPacket Y5-210MU External 5G Hub in mid September. I was so happy as my area hasn’t got fibre and I was getting an amazing 500mbs over 5g.

This last week we had a power cut in the area and ever since the router seems to be stuck on 4G no matter how many times I restart it. My iPhone with the 5g sim can get 500mbs no problem but the router seems to stay stuck on 4g. I tried calling three support and they don’t seem to understand and read the same ‘slow speeds script’.

Is there something you guys can help me debug or work out what’s wrong? Maybe the local mast I was connecting to before has died and I need to move the hub to a new location as at the moment it’s on a pole on the back of the house.

Previously the router was showing signal strength of 75-85 on the little lcd screen but now it seems to be moving between 22 and 44.

Thanks

Have your tried logging in as admin and doing a factory reset?

Are your phone and router talking to the same cell ids?

After about a week everything seems to be working again on 5g, maybe a cell tower was down, no idea. Thanks anyway

Hi,

Does anyone know what the "admin" password is for this hub control panel? the password printed on the device doesn't work. The default admin passwords dont work either. I'm able to login as "user". Tried a reset as well but no luck. Thanks

It's possible the admin user is locked.
On the ZTE MC7010 it's a similar story, the login is with "user" user, but it has access to privileges like cell locking etc.

Just set mine up.
When I try to go to the admin page. It shows the login screen and quickly goes to a blank page.
192.168.0.1

Any ideas?

Also. If I do get in, is there a setting to prevent it auto updating the software?

Thanks!

I posted somewhere else in the forum on how to fix that, maybe an admin can pin the post because I cant find it.

Essentially you need to add greenpacketdevice.com to your windows hosts file.

192.168.0.1 www.greenpacketdevice.com

  • It is located in "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc" on both Windows 10 and 11
  • You need administrative permissions to edit it.

Yeah I saw this but it’s happening on my iPhone which is annoying 😂
