Raise your hand if......

You are one of the many that have a exchange that is FTTC enabled/capable but still no cabinet upgrade so cant have FTTC.

Lets see what a shambles the roll out is.
:eek:

That might be a bit difficult because people don't always know if the issue is with their cabinet. Often once BT upgrades the exchange it can just end up saying that FTTC isn't available to you, where as before the upgrade it might have given the exchange RFS date. In any case many people don't seem to look into the detail of why they can't get the service.

My ISP originally told me my exchange was being upgraded by "Spring 2010", BT put this back and announced the upgrade would take place "Autumn 2011"; so in theory I should get home from China to find superfast broadband at my fingertips.... yeah-right; I expect it will take another 20 years to upgrade the street cabinets.

And what use is 20+mbps if the ISP still have you on a 2Gb per month limit?? I am fine with my package (25/999Gb), but I can foresee a lot of people getting VERY big bills in the month after the upgrades.

A fair reply but most readers (atleast regulars) i think are the opposite and are well aware if their exchange is enabled or not, if it is then they can easily find out if their cabinet is enabled just by running their phone number through BTs checker. In addition to check if the exchange is enabled they can run business numbers in the public domain (friends with permission obviously) or similar through it, shockingly doing this soon builds up a picture of what areas of your town have and have not had cabinet upgrades.

I'm not sure about mine.

According to Samknows, having thrown in both telephone number and postcode...
"FTTC should be available in your area from 01/12/2011"

As we are now some way past the 1st of December, that looks to me as if the info's not been updated.
However, the last info I had from my ISP was that I should be able to get it from 31st December, not 1st December, so I wonder if the Samknows date is just a typo.

I'll let you know in January if I remember! :laugh:

Feed you number into BT infinitys checker, it will either state a date if your exchange is enabled but waiting a cabinet upgrade or not.

BT's Infinity checker can't make its mind up from one minute to the next. :confused:

When I tried it earlier...
On the first attempt it told me that I didn't have a BT line. "Twaddle", thought I, "the ruddy thing's misbehaving", so gave it another kick.
On the second attempt it admitted that I had a BT line, told me I couldn't get Infinity, but didn't say why - I forget the exact wording, but the reason given was something on the lines of "it may be that your exchange has not been enabled yet or it may not be available on your individual line", very vague.

Prompted by your reply to give it another shot, I find that it obviously works on the same principle as BT Retail's dire customer service - try at three different times and you'll get three different answers - because this time it is telling me that I can get it *now*.

It's nearly 3 a.m.
I expect BT have decided that they don't have the capacity to cope with daytime demand, so are running FTTC from my exchange on an "off-peak only" basis - about eight o'clock in the morning they'll switch it off, so, yes, I can get it *now*, but I won't be able to if I try again at a more respectable hour!
:laugh:

The message I get from the BT checker is;

Sorry, you're not currently able to get BT Infinity. This may be because your area has not been enabled yet, or your individual line does not support super-fast broadband. Register your interest and we'll let you know if this changes.

You don't need to use BT for FTTC most ISPs have the same product just the word Infinity cannot be used as BT have it locked to them... Not surew what goon allowed a normal word to be protected to 1 company..

@mike306...

Yes, that's the one - I couldn't remember the exact wording, but now you've put it in front of my eyes, that's exactly what I got on my second attempt.

@Kits...
Don't worry, we're only using the checker! I would rather do without the internet than use BT as my ISP, and from his other recent posts, Mike isn't intending to use them either. They are doing the usual con, of course - calling it "BT" Infinity, not "Openscreech" Infinity (or whatever) in the knowledge that Joe Public doesn't know one side of BT from the other so will assume that you have to sign up to BT as your ISP to get it, but we aren't that gullible!

@sentup.custard

LOL it boggles the mind how BT can claim how many people can have the service when the databases in use don't even seem to know for sure eh?

@Kits
I only mentioned using the checker for people to check, wasn't suggesting they buy fibre direct from BT, in fact if they can afford it from other ISPs there are plenty id recommend before BT. People can of course use other ISPs checkers but for the most part for FTTC/P services they seem tied into BTs database.

Talking of the checker had another look today for giggles and now when i enter my number its quoting end of March 2012.

Back in November they were saying End December this year, prior to that this year at various points of checking they have said March, June and September.

It looks like im doomed and they just keep putting the date back 3 months at a time and have no real clue when my road and many others in the area will get a nice shiny new cabinet.

Seems to be the same story for much of my town even though the exchange has been enabled since 2010, i guess the few cabinets and the few premises they have done in my town were the easy jobs and elsewhere there is a horrid duct block or similar. That or they just have no intention to enabled the rest of the cabinets in my far from rural area and very busy town with thousands on the exchange.

I suspect this is a similar story up and down the country, it certainly is for various towns down south from speaking to others.

And on the flip side - a local exchange, Cranleigh (THCN), billed to have FTTC only "by the end of 2012" already has shiny green FTTC cabinets appearing during the last week or so. No FTTC results / dates appear at all in the BT checker when inputting numbers on this exchange.

Ah, crazy, large, disorganised and in-communicative companies.. so much fun.

"...now when i enter my number its quoting end of March 2012."

Oh - that's because it's Sunday. ;)
Due to the EU directive on working hours, the checker has to have one day off a week, and that's a default page that comes up automatically for everyone on a Sunday.

Well, that's what I reckon, because...
Having had (summarised)...
(1) Naughty boy, you don't have a BT line,
(2) Not yet, sunshine, but we ain't telling you what the score is,
(3) It's your lucky day - buy while stocks last,
...the damned thing is now telling me the same as you - I'll be able to get it in March 2012.
:laugh:

All I need now is "What are you using this for? You already have FTTC!", and I'll have the complete set...
:rolleyes:
