RCS UK Carrier Support for iOS

Seeing as currently only EE (BT) support RCS chat on iOS I thought it'd be a good idea to create this thread so we can keep up to speed with any developments from the other 3x MNO's.

Since it will probably be quite a while before there are any updates, I predict that 1p Mobile may be the first MVNO to support it (I regard EE and BT as the same thing despite Apple listing BT as an MVNO). As for which of the main networks will be next, that's harder but I'm going to gamble on Vodafone. :)

It's interesting but I do think you could be right with Vodafone being next up out of the big MNO's. Little ironic considering only last year Vodafone turned off it's carrier own RCS services haha

has anyone tried with a 1p SIM? I would expect it to "just work" since there isn't a lot for EE to do to make it work. It works for me already with a BT "business" SIM.

Some providers maintained their own RCS systems but have moved to Google's own RCS backend. Telstra also did their own thing before closing it down in favour of Google.

VF have told me they are not planning on supporting RCS on iOS.

I have a feeling this will happen to o2 and Three as well, as why support the current implementation by Apple, which as we have discussed in the other RCS thread, is just a compliance release as Chinese Regulation means if Apple want to sell any devices in China they have to implement RCS

I hope I am wrong...

If enough people write in by post to the CEOs of each of those companies, i.e. VF, o2 and Three, that could help them change their mind.

Saw this coming a mile off. If apple was going to use RCS on carrier side they should have supported it back when it started for android in 2016.

Three won't ever support it.

unless that's from a person who would actually make that decision, I probably wouldn't place much stock in it.
Anyone feeling particularly aggrieved by Apple on this issue (or any issue) can email:

margrethe-vestager-contact @ ec.europa.eu (remove the two spaces)
You might get more of a response from general.enquiries at cma.gov.uk, though they might point out that it's up to the carrier and Apple is not preventing them from enabling it.

Fairly high.
The supervisor at a call centre knows about as much as you or I.
Apple are being ......
Apple are being what? They have left the decision to enable RCS up to individual carriers. EE/BT have decided to go for it from day one (or technically earlier than that as it was enabled in the betas). Others will make their own decision.

The EU or UK authorities won't give an F over this. If anything they'll be happy that the option is finally there and iMessage's monopoly as the built in messaging protocol is over - if the carrier decides to enable it.

Apple are being malicious let's see how long that lasts.
Hardly. Google ended up having to provide their own hosted RCS services due to global disinterest and/or implementation issues from mobile operators. Why should anyone be surprised to find that mobile operators are still disinterested?

Additionally, Apple have been compelled to implement RCS for interoperability reasons but have zero incentive to run their RCS infrastructure. Also not a surprise.

Well Vodafone are claiming that they need Google approval to implement RCS on iOS
