ready to make the leap

having set up and joined many threads i am about to leap into adsl thank u to all who have given free advice i have now drawn up a shortlist of 2 to make my selection.

AOL silver £18 1mb or eclipse £18 flex 500 which is best i like the speeed of aol but most reviewers sujust in the long term eclispe might be more reliable just wish they would increase the speed to catch-up with competition.

any comments

Ultimately, you read as much as possible and then make a choice.

Both are 12mths contract - Are you sure you want to be tied up to such a long contract?

AOL is fine but even I worry about their Customer Services and I've been with them years.

I recommend looking at as many of the forums and threads as possible.

You also want a viable support number for the weekend - You don't want to wait til the Monday if you have a problem on a Friday night.

I think you can go for an eclipse monthly (not a 12 month contract) if you may for the installation (i think). Remember speed isnt everything.

i have my doubts about 12 month contract but it seems to standard for most isp's at this sort of range have looked at eclipse t&c which states cancellation fee of £47 and return or payment of £26 for modem within 12 months which at least is a get out clause have not checked AOL t&c yet to see what their policy of cancellation in first 12 months is

Depending on your anticipated usage requirements, Plusnet may fulfil your requirements.

If you anticipate a high usage, go elsewhere, however I don't use that much, I have a rock solid connection with them, and 24/7 UK based support on an 0845 number. ( monthly contract ).

Good luck with your new inroads to ADSL.

Try NDO/Namesco too: www.ndo.com

No moving goalposts there.

Also 100% UK based support at 0845 rates. There is a cancellation charge of £58.75 if you cancel in the first 12 months; but otherwise it's a monthly contract.

I rang eclipse about further fees if you cancel within 12 months, told them I understood about the £47 connection fee and that I would have to return the modem, and the person went off to find out, came back and said "you do not have to return the modem" to which I asked "and there would be no further fees payable?" "..no".
It might be worth double checking if you would have to pay for the modem if you don't return it. I understood from the terms and conditions that there was a charge for non return of the modem within 5 days, this guy I spoke to seemed to think this was untrue.

witchypoo u read the t&c as i did may be its there in-case they get a lot of cancellations and may decided to charge for modem to recoup any losses but at present it probably isnt worth the effort since they wont be paying £26 per modem since they will be buying in bulk.

so £47 for connection charge which goes to bt is a fair get out of jail clause

as for plusnet i dont envisage high data usage but with 3 teenages wanting mp3 players updated with recent releases and web chat with their mates and also some downloading of video contenet at peak times i dont want to fall prey to plusnet shape shifting or speed throtleing

another isp to catch my eye is new-net offering 25gb download (probably well over sufficient) 2mb speed for £19 monthly but it is £47 connection and purchase own modem or router. eclispe would let me get started and then could upgrade or migrate latter for £47 connection charge refund to eclipse.

line was working wednesday at 2.2mb no webmail.

connection date has passed and webmail and domain up and running, struggled with username for webmail as eclipse had given me 3 usernames for different things, contacted online helpline was given a reply within 60 seconds and webmail accounts were fully enabled. thought they might have had a home page but seem only to have a log-in page for account details and web-mail or have i missed somthing still not recieved welcome pack yet maybe that will give me answeres but at the moment i am enjoying 2mb surfing and downloading and still having a phone, wow

well it's good there is a get out clause. friend of mine is tied to 3 years with his phone provider, his only hope out, is that they are providing a pathetic service for the £30 he pays a month.

i felt 1 year a long tie in but i would never have signed for 3 years. this must be the longest contract obligation ever. how can anyone be sure of staying in the same house for 3 years.

read terms and try migrating to another phone company and let them find out if they can get friend out of contract, then look for a new isp with better terms.
