Rebel Internet

Appears their website doesn't load (provided I am going to the right place), not the most promising start 😁

Seems to be a bit of a gimmick to me, you're paying a minimum of £55 a month for 1gig internet via openreach compared to £40.99 directly from BT for the same thing. This is only worth it if you only need it short term, otherwise you're better signing up to a longer term deal with the likes of BT

For me, it's about testing the waters. What if after a month I realise that actually, BT is worse for me than my previous provider?

I'm all for 0 contracts, or at the very least bringing them waaaay down from 24m
Surely the only way you're going to be able to test BT is by connecting via BT they also have a 14-day cooling-off period just in case It's not very good

I learnt this the hard way last year with Zen. That clock starts ticking when you place the order, not when the service goes live. Install times are usually a convenient... 14 days in the future

We didn't get a press release. Perhaps they were afraid I'd poke holes.. time to write some news.

Wi-Fi has become the new soap powder, with everyone having the "Our Best Ever" every few months with no qualifications or evidence provided that actually is any better. In reality it is the same old Wi-Fi, same number of channels and broadcast at the same maximum power as every other device as the law allows. Just throwing more Wi-Fi points into a property is not improving Wi-Fi, its actually making it worse really, so that everyone has to keep adding more access points and mesh networks.

This has caused confusion due to the way some ISPs (notably Virgin Media) implement it, but the 14-day cooling off period is designed to let you have a think about the contract you signed and whether you're happy with it - the objective is that you have a couple of weeks after being upsold on a faster connection than you need to approach it with a clear head and change your mind.

It's not intended as a try-and-buy, and it doesn't override existing consumer law - if you sign up to a BT FTTP service and upon installation the service isn't up to scratch then you have all the same rights you had before Ofcom granted additional rights to pursue a cancellation, though this will likely involve writing complaint letters.

Also, beware signing contracts in service provider stores when cooling-off may not apply at all. I recall it was something of a recurring topic for my service provider, EE.

Correct, the 14 day cooling off period comes from The Consumer Contract Regulations 2014, which succeeded the The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.

Anything bought online, over the phone or by post has a 14 day cooling off period.

If a contract is agreed face to face on premises operated by the supplier it's not been agreed 'at distance' and hence not subject to the 14 day cooling off period.

The exception on fave to face contracts is where you are approached either at home or elsewhere by a sales person with no prior appointment (i.e. broadly you didn't initiate the conversation) - contracts agreed in this circumstance do have the 14 day cooling off period.
