Recieved cold caller today

Hi all,

Today we got a cold caller from a number that is just 08000 according to 1471?
Enquiring whether we know about how our pcs can slow down and how we can get a virus.
The caller was from a long distance call center and just stated there from an "internet provider". They gave no name of isp they are with.
The call was on a line that has never had broadband and they stated the line owners name. This particular line is through virgin media.
Where as the broadband line is through BT and never has a phone plug in.

Anyone else had this sort of call?

Thanks,

Louis

join the TPS (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/what/) its the telephone preference service, basically its the ability to opt out of cold calling, if companies do call then they are slapped.. feel free to read more and find out.

great in theory but not greatly effective in the real world, only keeps some of the vermin down, foreign calls, market research/survey (so called) excluded.
very little chance of the TPS doing anything unless they get millions of complaints against an offender ,and even then you have to jump through hoops to make a complaint

Sadly cold calls are still a very common problem, largely because they're easy to setup and hard to stop due to their mobility.

We get those calls from "Microsoft" even though we are on the TPS and have a number well outside the "geographical" range for this area (VoIP number). My wife just trolls them claiming she is running the software to connect them etc.. and asking why they are not fixing the problem. In the end they give up and go away but wastes a good 30 minutes of their time each time

My neighbour kept getting calls from “Microsoft !!!” stating his name and saying he had a virus on his computer. What they asked him to do would have meant they had remote control of his computer. But he hasn’t and never has had a computer. I said just put the phone down but he never would for some reason. In the end he said "I'm recording this conversation and tracing the call". They have never rung back.
Any cold callers I just put the phone down. I have very few since joining the Telephone Preference Service www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Yes, me and another relation have both received calls from "anon" most telling us that our Pc`s are infected with a virus and are not performing as well as they should. I was informed they were working on behalf of my ISP as I was causing problems with their server.
When I asked them the name of my ISP - there was a long silence
After a few choice words like " do you think I an some kind of idiot" I hung up.

my friend in wales also had a call from someone claiming the same, once before he got connected to the internet.. and another time after.. the second time he played along purely for a laugh, the joke was on them tho lol.

I had a call today from someone calling themselves Something It Dept - very muffled Eastern voice - I just kept saying - Sorry I cant hear what you are saying and they rang off - Last week caller said is your computer on - I said No and they said put it on quick - I said No I am on Dialup and they rang off - But this has only happened since I put my Order in for B/Band - while they were working on the Line before active and today. Any clues how they could have got my Landline Number- Curiouser and curiouser !!!

Others will also automatically dial a range of numbers until somebody or something answers, at which stage they log the number as being active.

I just thought it might be significant with the timing - from date of order for B/Band - first one during week of work on my line pre-activate and then after week on B/Band - I dont think Fast.co.uk would have had any hand in it as they have been brilliant from start to now - that's why I went to them. I have no doubt the Fast Rep will see this - could it be that somewhere along the line someone can see that there is going to be a new BB connection from outside of Fast - I have just done 1471 and sure enough with held number - I think I should get a Block on with held numbers - would that stop it completely

Hi all,

We occasionally get international marketing/scam calls with bogus Caller IDs, I'd guess they use a fake CLID as people like me have got in the habit of ignoring international calls. Sending a bogus CLID on BT's network is against their rules, but I don't know if BT would do anything about it.

I think my dad may have had one of the virus scam calls recently, he couldn't understand much of the call, as the caller had a very heavy accent, and was very faint. He wouldn't be daft enough to fall for it anyway.

I keep meaning to try recording the first tone of the "out of service" tones in front of the normal message on my answer machine, as that's supposed to fool some auto-dialers into hanging up if the answer machine gets it, and if you're lucky might even get your number blacklisted by the dialer.
