Recommend Zen?

Hi folks,

My BT contract is coming up for renewal and I’m looking to save a few pounds, and like BT, Zen will let me pay the monthly bill when I want to (before the due date of course) rather than have a direct debit.

It seems that according to this and other forums, Zen have had a few connection/speed issues over the last year.

Have these issues resolved?

I used to be with Zen before moving to BT for FTTC, and the customer support was always very good.

I’m currently using an Openreach HG 612 modem and an Apple Time Capsule router, will I be able to continue using these with Zen?

Many thanks,

Most broadband speed issues tend to be area specific, rather than national, and to be frank Zen Internet is still one of the highest rated broadband providers in the market. So the "risk" of getting a bad service, while not zero, is far lower with a generally higher rated provider.

I've just switched to Zen after several years with Sky. I was getting cheesed off with them anyway, and when I decided I wanted to use a 2nd hand AVM Fritz!Box router I'd come across and they told me they wouldn't support it, and also continually increasing the monthly rate, I decided to jump ship.

We were looking around and I'd heard good things about Zen, so while I was on hold ringing them up, my other half was looking at their website and told me "hey, they supply a Fritz!Box router..!" Not only that but it was a better model than the one I had..!

So that was me sold, we found out also a little about their history, they're based in Rochdale, which is where my mother-in-law was born, so another bonus..!

Not had the switch take place yet, but hopefully all will go well, I'll post thoughts here after it all happens.

We switched to Zen in March and have had no issues. The Fritzbox is easy to setup and use as well. Great wifi coverage.

Well we finally went live yesterday, although it was not without its problems. The phone line went dead from about 9am or so and didn't return until 3pm, when it had a strange new number and we couldn't make calls except to 0800 numbers.

The broadband didn't come up until about 6.15pm, and it was ok except that our SIP lines (on two Cisco IP phones) didn't want to work, by which time the phone line port had completed successfully.

We didn't know what was going on, but Stefan at tech support was excellent and talked us through refreshing the cache on the IP phones and the router, apparently the phones were trying to register while the router was talking to Zen's configuration server and got confused.

After that, all but one of the lines worked perfectly, except for the one from Gradwell. It refused to register on one of the two phones and the other one didn't ring on incoming calls. The other lines on Sipgate and CallCentric worked perfectly.

So we called Gradwell tech support. I've been a customer of Gradwell for 15 years and I've never before had a problem in any way on several different ATA's and broadband providers. However, the guy there was useless and insisted it was Zen's fault, although I really don't think it was.

Anyway, more fool them because I have now set in motion the process to port the Gradwell number to Sipgate, saving myself £7.20 a month in the process.

Back to Zen, the service from tech support was nothing short of superb and after a few teething problems all is ok. The Fritz!Box 7530 is excellent and a breeze to configure, which is one of the things that drew us to Zen in the first place.
